Sumida Aquarium offers an up-close and personal view of a very carefully curated albeit small selection of marine life that includes jellyfish, penguins, sea turtles, and a small number of crustaceans. The design is postmodern minimalist and the layout is mostly linear, from start to finish. Much akin to the waiting line experience of a Universal theme park ride, visitors traverse a linear(i.e., sequential) yet windy path which culminates at a penguin aquarium that can be viewed from all four sides, above and below. I came with low expectations, not expecting much, but left with nothing but high praise and exaltations. Bide your time here while waiting for your scheduled appointment to see Tōkyō Skytree.

Not worth the 2000yen entry fee. 75% of the aquarium is fish. There is a small, depressing indoor pool with penguins and an even smaller pool for the two sea otters they have. Definitely not going back!

This is one of the best places I’ve ever visited. I love it! This is a must see! The way they display the sea life is beautiful and interesting. There’s nothing like it. The entrance fee is also reasonable for this size aquarium. You will soon get there looking up the Tokyo Sky Tree. My favorite ones are the jelly fish and the spotted garden eels. There are so many spotted garden eels! They sometimes communicate to each other and it’s so fun to watch them. The illuminated jelly fish are also beautiful. You can enjoy salt water and freshwater creatures in Japan. It may be good idea to buy ‘the annual pass’ because it only costs double of the entrance fee. You can get your money worth by visiting at least one more time in the same year. Of course I have it! To get a pass, you only have to fill out your address and take your photo.
