I have been to jimjilbangs in Korea(of course), New York, and Toronto, so when I was in Tokyo I had to see if there were any jimjilbangs around. Luckily, there are a few that are located in the Korean area in North Shinjuku easily accessible by metro. They are not so foreigner friendly in that their websites mostly do not have English and they are not as well reviewed in travel sites/blogs compared to Japanese sento or onsen. So, I’m writing an English review to help out other travellers! Location: — It’s easy to miss, off the main road when you exit Higashi-Shinjuku station and walk west. It is not actually facing the main road, but it is down a small alley. Sounds sketchy, but it’s totally safe. Turn into the alley at «Barbie Bar». Facilities: — Not as fancy as some saunas I visited in Korea, but very clean and comfortable. — 1st floor — lockers and vanity area(q-tips, face cream, body lotion, brushes, hair dryers are provided), restaurant, smoking room — 2nd floor — hot and cold baths, showers, 2 dry saunas, 1 steam room, body scrub area(costs extra) — 3rd floor — lounge area, rooms for spa services(e.g. massage) — They provide you with a robe, towels, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, body wash so you don’t have to bring anything(compared to some basic onsen that do not provided these things) — Open 24 hours Price: — 1500 yen for up to 3 hours or more for up to 10 hours Etc.: — Staff speak very little English — Tattoos are allowed! I saw several women with large tattoos. So, this is a great option for those who have tattoos and are afraid of being kicked out of Japanese onsens. — There are smaller lockers on the 2nd floor(in addition to the main one on the 1st floor), so you can bring whatever you need and store it there(e.g. a book to read, water bottle) so you don’t have to go back and forth all the time Overall, a very relaxing experience and a great way to unwind after lots of sightseeing!
