When I was in college, I used to come here often. Cheese on ramen sounds weird but it is actually amazing. Not like American, cheese is never too much. Soup is great too. I want to come back there someday.

My favorite tomato ramen shop, Akanasuya in Shibuya closed down, and I was incredibly disappointed until I was told by one of my Japanese friends that Tsukumo Ramen in my neighborhood is famous for its tomato ramen. So I rushed right over and… nope, still disappointed. The ramen here is very average and the tomato soup broth lacked the depth and complexity that Akanasuya had. I really can’t say that I recommend it.

Cheese ramen; sounds so wrong but is so absolutely indulgently, delicious — if you can finish the whole bowl without feeling queezy I would be impressed. I never manage that last guilty spoonful. Definitely not textbook ramen, for that you have far better options in Ebisu — however for a wonderful guilty pleasure this is your place. Good luck!

I had been hearing about cheesy ramen from my mentor for years so was stoked when I finally arrived in Japan and had the opportunity to have some! This place has a patent on their marukyu cheese which is kind of like Parmesan. I ordered my marukyu ramen with extra green onions, marinated soft boiled egg and bamboo. This huge steaming bowl of ramen topped with a mountain of cheese came out and I was in heaven! The broth is rich and delicious. Granted this is not a traditional ramen, I was still super happy and disgustingly full! I actually couldn’t even finish my bowl though I had come in starving. Ben ordered the tonkotsu ramen with a boiled egg and green onions. The broth was delicious and I liked that it was heavy on the white pepper. Lastly the gyoza was also delicious!

Just my personal opinion — Tsukumo used to be my favorite ramen restaurant until I noticed the strong chemical boric-acid-like smell of the noodles about two years ago(the smell when you fry or boil the food containing borax). I tried many times but sadly the noodles just smell — maybe I’m too sensitive, or its not borax problem but the noodles smells chemicals somehow. And they stop providing free toppings any more(like spicy bean sprouts, fresh green onions, and spicy leaf mustard). Except the noodles, I do love Tsukumo –sniff– the pork ramen and the famous cheese ramen are both good. The soup is rich and creamy, the 70th pop music is good, and the waiters are very friendly, too bad that its hard to find other ramen restaurants offering cheese ramen since Tsukumo seems to take out a patent on their Marukyu Cheese Ramen. I personally sincerely wish Tsukumo would improve the noodle problem and I’d definitely frequent Tsukumo like before!
