we were walking around shibuya and after sight seeing, we were hungry. i wanted some katsu and BF found this place on Unilocal.off we go and followed the gps. well, restaurants in japan are very hard to find and this was no exception. this is located in the back alley of like the seedy places but we found it, thanks to the Unilocalers who posted pictures of the outside sign. you’re literally eating at someone’s house. no english at all but no problem, we were there for katsu so we just said tonkatsu. there were locals eating and they seem to be enjoying their food so i was excited. they give you soup and tea and then they cook the food right in front of you. omg that was some of best tonkatsu I’ve ever had in my life. so crispy, flavorful and i was just in heaven. oh, and very cheap too! i wish we had eaten here one more time before we left… hopefully its still around when we go back

Though this place is a little hard to find(and I don’t know if I would be walking around on this street late at night) this restaurant was really delicious! I got the tonkatsu torikatsu set, which came with, you guessed it, tonkatsu and torikatsu(fried breaded pork and chicken, respectively). It also came with rice and miso soup. The style was very homemade, if that makes sense. I imagine if I had a Japanese mom, this is what torikatsu would taste like. It was just oily enough to give it flavor, but not too heavy. The meat was very juicy too. Of course, you can top it with mustard and sauce(which I did liberally). The pieces were a little smaller than some other places, but for 650 yen you can’t beat the price. I would definitely come here again for lunch(and now that I know where it is, I can get there quicker). I recommend it for a quick lunch, but note that there is no English, but if you just say«torikatsu» they will get what you mean.

So you’re looking for a cheap place to eat and you want a hole-in-the-wall Japanese joint? Then Torikatsu is your place. Torikatsu is a little hard to find. This basement establishment is in an apartment(I think???) building on a tiny alley in the middle of the love hotel area in Shibuya. You sit at the counter, tell them what fried item combination you want(check out my tip for pricing details). There are eleven fried things to choose from. The ladies making the katsu are super sweet. I got a tonkatsu and torikatsu set for 650 yen. If you are looking for Maisen level food, this isn’t the place. It’s more like a home fried katsu meal. The pieces are thin, crispy and didn’t feel heavy or too oily. They only take cash and there are no English menus so you might want to bring someone who can read /order in Japanese.
