You know a place will be good when they only do less than a handful of things. This place has three options though the best is clearly the oyakodon. It’s the best I’ve had in my life. It’s filling and tasty. The egg yolk is one of the most golden orange I’ve ever seen. The chicken is cooked perfectly moist. The rice is just perfectly cooked. I’d go out of my way to try this place. It’s also really cheap.

This is what I imagine Oyako Don should taste like. A whole lot of runny egg, soft moist chicken, perfect rice. Hashidaya had about 2 or 3 things on their menu in total. The place is tiny, but they perfected their craft. We went to a few other places for Oyako Don and they didn’t make their eggs runny. Just looking at these pictures is making me crave runny egg again. I want to go back to Japan!

Whenever my friends from abroad come to visit me, this is the first place I point them to. If you’re looking for authentic Japanese comfort food, there’s nothing better than an Oyakodon, and this place has it down. Their lunch set is well priced, and for an additional 50 yen you can get a chicken broth on the side. Their Oyakodon is pretty much perfect… sitting at the bar, you can watch the staff prepare your bowl. Their Chicken Nanban is also amazing. Perfectly crisp juice chicken, topped with their Nanban sauce, similar to a tartar sauce, with chunks of hard-boiled egg. I have yet to try their Soboro, which is one of my favorite Japanese foods, but when I go, it’s just so hard to NOT get the oyakodon.
