I forget who told me about Katsukura but in the last 3 trips out to Tokyo and Kyoto, I’ve dined here atleast 6 times! This place is so good that I had back-to-back dinners here! This past trip was no different, a must stop when visiting Japan. Couldn’t find the location where we dined at which was at the Shinjuku station up on top of a department store. As Kassy mentioned, they are a chain and you can find a location practically everywhere. This past trip we noticed a few new items on the menu and though the 120g set is usually enough food for me, I knew I had to make room to try atleast one item. Miso eggplant and I believe spinach . Doesn’t look appetizing but boy was it tasty! As with most tonkatsu restaurants, they’ll give you toasted sesame seeds so that you can personally grind them to your preferred coarseness and add the tonkatsu sauce accordingly. I personally prefer the spicy version over the regular so that’s what goes into my bowl. You’ll also notice another big jar of sauce on the table which is the dressing that you add to the shredded cabbage with your set. Oh and there’s also pickled veggies which have a shiso flavor which you need to make sure you try. I usually pick up a few packages to take home!!! One new item we tried was their«Italian egg» which is basically a perfectly soft boiled egg wrapped in ham and cheese then deep fried!!! OMG was this delicious!!! A must try when dining here. You can’t go wrong with any of the different varieties of pork that they offer on the menu. I’ve tried all of them and even the lowest grade of pork is 10000x better than what we can get here in the US . The rice, miso soup and cabbage is AYCE so don’t feel bashful in asking for more if you want.

Katsukura is one of those eateries that I MAKESURE to dine at, at least a couple of times, every time I visit Japan. The fact that they are a chain business and are still able to maintain the quality of service and food that they do, is unbelievable to me. I honestly do not think that you can get better tonkatsu than at Katsukura. I order the same thing every time I’m here. I get the 120gram pork filet, which comes with unlimited miso soup, unlimited rice and unlimited cabbage. Also a mini appetizer dish, which you get a choice between hiyayakko(tofu with scallions) or pickled vegetables. I always get the hiyayakko, as I am a big tofu fan. After you place your order, the staff will bring you a bowl with some sesame seeds in it. You are to grind this to the fineness of your liking, and pour a tonkatsu sauce of your choice into the bowl. They have a regular sauce and a spicy sauce, but to be honest I don’t think the spicy sauce is spicy at all. I usually mix the two. Of course, you do not have to use the sesame seeds if you don’t want to. Dip the slices of tonkatsu into your dipping bowl and enjoy the crispy goodness! They also have a special yuzu sauce for the cabbage, which is DIVINE. Coming from the states, you may be hesitant to eat the amount of uncooked cabbage that they give you, but trust me, with the yuzu sauce it’s delicious, and you may be asking for more.
