A very nice, old-school public bath run by a very friendly young, 25 year old Japanese man who is a sento(public-bath afficianado). They heat up the water the old-fashioned way with a wood-burning stove. If you watched Spirited Away and want to experience a classic public bath, then try this place out. The owner speaks a little English, enough to figure out what to do. The price itself can’t be beat, it was Y450 at the time of writing. They welcome foreigners(as long as you follow the usual rules, like rinsing before you get in the tub, don’t swim, etc.). While you will get clean in a nice hot bath, you should know it’s not hot spring water(onsen). You will get a sense of what old Kyoto is like — right down to the locals who have visited this bathhouse for several generations.
