What a pleasant surprise to stumble across this soba restaurant. All the soba noodles are handmade, and the sashimi and tempura are outstanding. The set meals are perfectly balanced, and the ingredients are extremely fresh. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I don’t know why this restaurant is not Michelin star restaurant. It beats all Michelin star restaurants I have ever had. You are not eating food. You are eating a quality life style. We tried the hot pot, which is great. But I want to recommend the soba noodle. I had it once before and I didn’t like it. But I don’t know what magic they used to make it so delicious. Everything is so good here.

Definitely a must-try if you’re looking for traditional soba. We had the hot soba with tempura, everything was delicious. They make it fresh onsite, and you can taste the quality. The cold soba looked amazing, but we didn’t try it when we went. Good service, English friendly. Make a reservation if you can. We were able to sneak in early without one, but seemed like they were pretty booked up.

Definitely the best soba I had by far. Request to sit by the kitchen bar if you can. It is fascinating seeing the cooking scene right in front of you. It was one of the coldest nights we had during our stay in Japan so we opted to try the hot soba. We both got the set menu — mine was hot soba with tempura and the hubby got a more complete set — hot and cold soba with tempura and sushi. I didn’t think I would like the hot soba so much given I am the biggest cold soba fan… but it was delicious. The noodle was al dente and the broth was flavorful. Tempura was good but we had better in Tokyo(but that’s not this place’s specialty). I tried some of my husband’s cold soba and it felt like heaven. How could something so simple tastes so good! Service was attentive… although the language barrier could be improved. Just point at the picture and enjoy your meal as instructed.

I never understood the appeal for soba dining in Japanese restaurants in the US. After trying soba here I finally know how real freshly made soba tastes like. The soba here is al dente and cooked to perfection. Get the cold noodles if you like them chewy. Make sure you try the soba ice cream too, it is phenomenal. Best soba I’ve ever tried and almost makes me forget all about ramen.

Located right by exit 4 of Gojo Station, this is an excellent place to try some hand made soba noodles with reasonable prices. We came here at around lunch time on a Friday, even though there were 5 people in line ahead of us, the wait was no more than 10 mins. There are heaps of tables upstairs on the second floor. I tried the tempura soba noodles and i loved it ! I love the green salt that goes with the tempura. The soba noodles was fresh(duh!) and the broth was packed with flavors. If you are around this area, I would recommend you to drop by :)

4 ½ stars I’ve been craving soba and was looking on Trip Advisor for restaurants near our place. Stumbled on Sobanomi. Saw great reviews and the pictures looked like what I was looking for! The wait was about 12 min. They hand make their noodles, so as you walk in you see them making the dough. The inside itself is pretty big. We were seated upstairs. Very nice atmosphere and casual. One downside, our waitress did not speak any English so communication was hard. If we asked something she would respond in Japanese and explained how to eat the food in Japanese. Luckily the menu had pictures, and they have an English menu so that was a big plus. They have mostly all set menus w/soba. You can do cold or hot soba. _Utage-Zen(3,000 yen)($ 24.72) Our full set course offering a varied selection of Japanese cuisine. *Appetizer *Sashimi(slices of 7 raw fish) *Assorted Tempura *Half portion of soba(cold) *Half portion of Sansai soba(hot soba w/mushrooms) *Dessert This is a great meal to get for first time customers or in general. It’s pretty big for 1 person, so you get a lot for the price. The sashimi was real fresh and buttery. 2 pieces of tuna, 2 pices of white fish, and 2 pieces of some other white fish. Next the cold soba, soft but a bit of an al dente texture, served with the sauce on side, with green onions and wasabi. Very refreshing, a bit sweet and salty. The tempura was the BEST I’ve had! so different from the ones i’ve had back home. The shrimp tempura was so fresh and buttery and lightly fried. The squash was perfectly sweet, the eggplant and pepper was subtle but added great flavor to the mix. Everything was lightly fried, and not oily or heavy. Served w/green salt to dip lightly, as too much overpowers the flavors. The hot soba was good as well. Served w/green onions and fried tempura crunch on the side. The broth was light and a bit salty. Finally the dessert. The ice cream was amazing! nutty and earthy and slightly sweet. Reminded me of barley. Topped with some sesame crunch or rice crunch and thin cookie stick. I would come here again just for this! _Otsukuri-Zen(1800 yen)($ 14.83) A set meal offering soba and sashimi *Soba(hot or cold) *Sashimi(same as above) *Fried rice Similar as dish above, my gf got this since she is allergic to shrimp, so no bueno on the shrp tempura. The rice was good, but nothing amazing. The soba is the main spotlight. To be honest the soba was good but It’s not something I was wowed about. I actually was more wowed by the tempura and ice cream. However I would come back here again in a heartbeat. Price is reasonable t for what you get and service is great. A must check out!

Good service, kind staff and they can speak explain the dishes in english. We ordered a set menu with a mix of tempura, soba noodles and a few smaller plates of antipasto/desert. Very good food at a low cost, cosy environment and interesting to see the chef making the noodles. Will definitely visit the place if I return to Kyoto. 5⁄5

The soba noodles are handmade on the premises. Fantastic flavor and quality, with fresh sashimi too. Soba tea, soba cookies and soba ice cream are tasty. A very nice experience.

First time having Soba. It was all delicious. Service was quick and polite. There is an English menu which is a bonus. The soba ice cream was unlike anything I have had and topped off a great meal.

Soba noodles here are 20% wheat flour 80% buckwheat flour, just fyi for the celiacs and gluten-intolerant! Fantastic homemade buckwheat tofu in addition to incredible soba with lovely mouthfeel. Make sure to reserve as seating is limited!

Wandered into this restaurant by chance, looking for a soba fix. Was delighted by the décor, great service(English language friendly) and delicious hand made soba. You can even observe the soba chefs hand roll and cut the noodles downstairs. Highly reccommended!

I had to rely heavily on gurunavi while I was in Kyoto because Unilocal hadn’t made it as far out as Kyoto just yet. When I searched for solid recommendations in the Gojo-Karasuma area, Soba no Mi Yoshimura came up at the top of the list, but at the same time it showed that the establishment is slightly pricier than what I’d been paying for lunch on afternoons past(realistically, no one should ever have to pay for more than 500 yen for a solid lunch in Kyoto. no one.) But given its rave reviews, I decided to drag a few of my coworkers out and give the place a shot. The first thing you notice when you enter the restaurant is that a giant portion of the store is dedicated to the production of the wonderful buckwheat noodles the world has come to know and love as «soba.» Every step of the seimen process can be observed, perhaps to enhance your dining experience, or just perhaps because demand for their soba is so great — but in any case, the establishment certainly does not leave you guessing on the freshness of their ingredients. As this establishment’s sole focus is on soba, you really can’t go wrong in ordering any of their soba offerings; I chose to go with their«soba tsukusi-zen» or rough translation«our best soba attempt,» which incorporates three different types of buckwheat noodles(juwari, or 100% buckwheat; ni-hachi, or 20% wheat and 80% buckwheat; and kawari/dororo soba) which pretty much rewrote everything I had previously known about soba. Every soba set is served with warm soba water(i.e. the boiling water in which the soba was… boiled) and Yoshimura’s special home-made soba tsuyu. Overall, a gourmet addition to an otherwise plain – but still better than most places in the US – gourmet district otherwise known as the«industrial area inbetween Kyoto Station and Shijo-dori»
