After visiting the Nishiki market, my husband and I were starving and searched Unilocal for recommended sushi bars. This one came up. It is difficult to find because you have to go down an alleyway, but BOY, are we happy we found this place. Hands down, best sushi that I had in Japan. We got the omakase($ 15 for 8 pieces), which also came with miso soup and a seaweed drink. This is very inexpensive compared to omakase in the US and makes me feel so silly for paying that much money in the US. The sushi was very fresh. I still have dreams of the botan ebi, and in my mind, kick myself for not doubling up on the omakase… but then again, the chefs would have thought I was a fat American if I did that Some things to be aware of: — the chef who made our sushi did not want us to add soy sauce because he had already added it on his end — it is recommended to wear something nice here. My husband and i wore t-shirts and shorts, and although we were the only ones at this restaurant, we felt very underdressed — staff is very attentive I would come back again, and again, and again.

An amazing find within the small streets of Kyoto. Before going, we made reservations with our hotel concierge since we were in town on a weekend during hanami season. Luckily we were able to secure a spot at the counter. Upon arrival, one of the managers was actually waiting for us outside the restaurant as we pulled in from our taxi! He called me by my name and brought us inside to this gorgeous restaurant. FYI, even though they have English menus, they still appreciated it more that we were able to still communicate in Japanese(they even confirmed it over the phone that it was Japanese speaking only). Overall it made the experience a lot smoother and better I thought. We opted for the omakase — chef’s course — set. At about 8000 yen, it was an amazing deal for the amount of food we got. We didn’t know when it would end! By doing this, we were also able to sample most of Kyoto’s local cuisine, from the vegetables to soups, to sashimi, and sushi. All and all, it was about a 6 – 7 course of amazing, fresh and delicious food. Highly recommended.

This is an amazing hidden gem in Kyoto. They have English menus so foreigners rejoice! The fish is from the renowned Tsukiji market and prepared to perfection-we had the chirashi which was a delicious adventure(they split the bowl into three mini courses– the first one you eat regularly, the second one they add some sort of special wasabi, and the third they mix with a soup). The seared salmon melts in your mouth. We sat at the bar to watch the chef prepare the food, and he had a great sense of humour and tried his best to converse with us and explain everything. Overall everything was delicious and both my boyfriend(who eats a lot for even North American standards) and I were full and very satisfied with a bill that only came to 7500 yen. Highly recommended.
