As a vegetarian in Japan, I was worried about difficulty finding a good food. I happened upon Tendon Tenki from Cee L.‘s previous review and though I would give it a try. I will review this restaurants for my fellow vegetarian travelers :) Upon entering, we asked the waitress for an english menu. From what I recall, they have the Dons which is tempura over rice, and the Set meals which is tempura + rice + miso soup. I believe they use dashi(fish base) in the miso soup. There were also add ons of tofu, vegetable tempura, and some other possibly non vegetarian options. All of the tempura for the dons and sets consisted of fish and shrimp. My sister and I speak no Japanese and proceeded to point to the sets/dons on the menu and say«vegetarian?» The waitress seemed to understand sent in the order. The food came out quite quickly and I was pleasantly surprised — they had a wide variety of veggies — shimeiji mushrooms, sweet potato, kabocha, zucchini, onion, and an unidentified leaf(sesame?) — it was delicious! Light and crispy and best of all — vegetarian! All in all, it was a great experience and probably one of the cheapest meal we’ve had in all of Japan. Would definitely recommend, especially if you don’t eat meat or fish :)

This place is a tempura house, so if you like deep fried breaded delicious food this is your place. My companion got a shrimp bowl that came w rice, some miso, salad, etc. Delicious. The extra star goes for the chef wanting to accommodate me, as a vegetarian. I used google translate to communicate that I did not eat meat, eggs, fish, chicken, or dashi. He made miso without bonito, tempura of just veggies and some tofu on the side. It was a great experience overall. I’ll be going back here.
