There are sooooo many spots like this in Osaka, actually… in Japan for that matter, that they all can pretty much look the same. That is to say that when it comes down to it what distinguishes one little restaurant with lovely, realistic looking plastic food in the display window outside from another? Service, quality, price, selection, atmosphere and of course the taste of the food. If this is your criteria(and it should be) and if you are in the Dojima(Kitashinchi) area of Umeda anytime soon… drop by DARUSYOKUDO. It is underground but not hard to find as it is not too far from Junkudo bookstore and a great spot to get a bite to eat. Actually, I only really have the same thing… the チキンカツ黒ルーライス. I am not a cute little Japanese girl and where I am from cool guys do not take pictures of food. Me being a cool guy I do not take pictures of food. However I will take a picture of the menu(just to help ya’ll out on Unilocal ;-) and at 880 yen you get a hearty portion of rice and black curry with a very nice sized fried chicken cutlet. (880 for a hearty medium serving; 980 yen gets you even more with the large.) You can see a display in the window outside the restaurant and bottom line… this is the one you want to try. This dish is a cannot miss. Not always easy to find a dish that sticks to your ribs for such a reasonable price in Japan. This チキンカツ黒ルーライス(chicken cutlet with black curry and rice) dish is a treasure. The two(2)major detractions in DARU are: 1. seating can be limited at times and 2. as the case in many places in Japan, smoking ISALLOWED. Put these two things together and if you are dining there at a busy time and the person next to you is decides to light up… well, you get the picture. (Tip: drop by for a late lunch or early evening meal… and avoid the crowds and heavy cigarette smokers.) However aside from this, I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite places to grab a bite in the area. The next time you are in the neighborhood… or even if you are not in the neighborhood, go out of your way, do yourself a favor and eat at DARUSYOKUDO.
