I like to explore new restaurants, so the number of fine dining establishments that get my repeat business is fairly limited. One that does is Hortensia, a French restaurant located in a quiet part of Azabu Juban. Hortensia opened in 2010 and they have kept a consistent concept — provide high-level French cuisines that marries both innovative and classic techniques, present the food beautifully, pair the dishes with interesting wines, and finally, provide this experience in a sleek atmosphere at a reasonable price. The«Mon Plaisir» dinner menu offers a unique feature. The menu is divided into appetizers and main dishes, but customers can choose any four dishes irrespective of the category, plus a dessert, for 8,400 yen. On the current menu, only one dish has a supplemental charge, so in most cases the cost for the course will be 8,400 yen. Please see the attached photos from a recent lunch. The lunch menu has many of the same dishes as the dinner menu. One thing you will notice is that the chef obviously cares a lot about presentation. Each dish has beautiful contrast of colors with the sauces and garnishes. Also, the dishes are wonderfully fragrant, so it’s a treat for all the senses.
