As a foreigner in Tokyo, it can be intimidating looking for a place to get your hair done. I have extremely fine and fragile hair(very different from typical Japanese hair) so I was extra nervous about getting my baylage and ombré done here in Japan. After reading reviews of Assort, I decided I would try it out. I scheduled an appointment with Miki. She was extremely nice and thoughtful throughout the whole process. She made sure I was comfortable and seemed to listen when I told her how I wanted my hair to be done. It came out great, but when I got home I noticed it was a little bit brassy/orange for my liking. I asked the salon if I could come back in to get it fixed and they promptly responded and fixed my hair(no additional charge), and now I love it! I was extremely impressed with their customer service and attention to detail. Everyone in the salon seemed to speak good English as well, which made the experience easier as I cannot speak Japanese. Thank you Miki and Assort, I will definitely return if I am ever in Tokyo again!

I’m convinced that Japanese hair products are better for my Asian hair than those available to me in America. My hair felt much softer and felt healthier when I used Japanese shampoo and conditioner during my 2 weeks there. Soooo. it only makes sense to get my hair cut and dyed in Japan. I chose Assort because they’re very English friendly — a must since I was planning on doing ombré, so good communication is key. I came on a Sunday afternoon and they were packed, but I was promptly offered a seat, choice of beverage(tea, coffee, water), and snacks(cookies and candy). They were very hospitable(ah, that Japanese hospitality) and I felt very welcomed. My guy was Shibuya, and he was great! I showed him a picture of the type of cut and color I wanted, and we discussed it a little bit to make sure he understood. and here’s what happened to my hair in the next 3 hours: 1) Colored blonde 2) Washed + some sort of soda conditioning that’s complimentary for first time customers 3) Colored brown 4) Washed 5) Think I got a head and shoulder massage here. and then cut 6) Blowdry and style Shibuya and I had some good talks — I practiced my Japanese and learned that a lot of American products can’t even be sold in Japan because the ingredients are too harsh for Asian hair. I loved everything they did here and it was around 18000yen/$ 155 after everything! That’s seriously an amazing price considering how it would cost more than double that in NYC + tip. Highly recommend coming here for your haircut. The Japanese really know what they’re doing :)(they spend more time on their hair every morning than any other asian)

New in town and needed a cut, badly. Wound up getting Takumi Shibuya, who spoke perfect English and gave me an excellent haircut. I was a little too preoccupied reading a magazine, but when I looked up, I looked great. Really happy with the cut and the salon, I’ll definitely return. First time customers get a free sparkling water wash at the end, which was great. I’ve never had something like that, so it was certainly a nice addition. When all was said and done, I got a head message and a kiss on the cheek. Kidding about the kiss but it wouldn’t have felt out of place. 10⁄10. Super stoked. Thanks, Takumi.

Absolutely Fantastic, Assort deserves each and every one of these 5 stars, Highly Recommended! I got a better haircut here than i have ever gotten in the United States! It is clear that my stylist, Takumi, has true talent and a good eye for detail ! I was concerned about getting an American style in Tokyo, but there was nothing to worry about here. The staff is Japanese, but communication was no problem at all and I only speak English. Also, the service is outstanding, impressively so! Afterwards, I walked out the exit feeling great about my appearance and not at all sad about spending the money. I will be sad that I can’t go back to get my haircut here again when I am in the United States.

This is by far the best experience I’ve had at a Japanese hair salon and thankfully it’s actually in Japan! I’ve always been to Japanese salons, anywhere in the world I go to, if I can. NY, London, Philadelphia, you name it, I’m there. I was in Tokyo and cannot pass the experience of getting a Japanese experience in Japan! Assort was very accommodating and helpful. Even told me I would be getting a stylist that didn’t speak English but that’s fine. I can always do by pointing, Google translation and grabbing someone next to me who can translate. I’m also used to speaking to people with little English skills — I speak slowly and don’t use much words. I was greeted by Sayaka, who turned out to be my hair stylist. She is so warm, welcoming and spoke some English! If you are a foreigner(and prob so since you are reading my English review), you should understand Japanese culture and mannerisms. They understate their skills, unlike the American culture. So she is learning English and can carry simple conversations but if you do ask for her, please don’t speak very quick with difficult vocabulary. It’s not only showing off but insensitive… Sayaka gave me very good advice about my hair and scalp that no other specialist nor review forum has been able to explain simply. She definitely has studied hair and scalp, and I’m happy bc only an Asian hair stylist know Asian hair. It was very good service and I even had the Japanese straightening done here which was very good. They use a strong straightener but their execution was fast and very professional. She had an assistant to help who was also very pleasant, skilled and helpful. They also offered me a nice beverage and even offered to charge my phone. They really went out of my way to feel good. Sayaka also offered me a sparkling soda spa(good for scalp). As a first time customer there is a very small discount I believe if you order a package and so that discount would somewhat offset the cost of the sparking soda spa for scalp. It felt nice and my hair smelled very fresh afterwards with a nice healthy scalp. I’d recommend this very nice and refreshing treatment for troubled scalp esp after a Japanese hair straightening. I would use this again, it’s worth it. They also have a cool area filled with Starbucks mugs worldwide. The owner also has smaller branches in NY and HK which I hope to visit as their service here in Tokyo is top rank. I had limited time in Tokyo but this was well worth my time. I read a sad review here with one star and also the store’s response. There is always two sides of a story but I can say that I did get a little lost coming here but that’s on me for being a little lost and also the store is located on the basement level so one should provide a bit more time to come here especially if you are a tourist and not local. Also if you speak English please don’t expect everyone in the world to be fluent… and to respect the stylists are really trying hard to be nice and to communicate. The Japanese are very kind people and so it’s nice to also reciprocate that. :-) I plan to return to Tokyo more often to visit and will choose this salon because it is the best!!!

It was nice to get my haircut in English in Japan for once. There were no big communication difficulties and the stylist took time to study and figure out my hair first before going at it. The space is big, loft-like and inviting, so you’re not sitting right next to anyone else. I was also taught a few haircare techniques. No problems at all, overall a good experience.

I’ve been going to Assort for about 2 years now, & am always very satisfied with the professional staff, atmosphere, and most importantly my haircuts. My hair is relatively thin, and I’ve received great product recommendations based on that – e.g., what won’t weigh my hair down too much to be effective as advertised, which I never would’ve thought of myself. I visited several other places around Tokyo before finding Assort, which I’ve stuck to & would highly recommend.

Oh dear. After reading so many positive reviews on other sites I was optimistic about trying this place. I went in for a cut and color, with photos of what I wanted. Instead of mahogany brown, my hair was turned blue black. The cut is uneven, as in one side is noticeably shorter than the other, and when I noticed a giant line near my temple where dye had been applied sloppily, it took effort to get them to fix it. When I said it was REALLY dark, the response was kin to «you’ll adjust.» Paid and left without pitching a fit because I didn’t want the same woman who botched it trying to fix it and making it worse-waiting until I get home to have someone who knows what they are doing try to salvage something.
