About to go nuts over heat and exhaustion, my husband and I suddenly saw Moderato, which appeared at first like a mirage. It’s in the middle of a long stretch between Hase and Kamakura, perfectly placed to satisfy a caffeine urge. They treat their coffee with special care. For 470Y, the iced coffee blend was strong and pleasant. I like the simple look of the café, with plenty of seating and acts as an empty canvas for discussions or surprising inspiration.

If you walk from Hase temple or Daibutsu(the great buddha) to Kamakura station and need a rest, I would recommend to stop by this café, just halfway to the station, 10 – 15 more minutes by walk I guess. This café serves cup of coffee with hand drip, after taking an order, the owner mills coffee beans that you chose. I prefer darker and much bitter coffee and was recommended a Brazilian one(CACIQUESANTOS), 490 Yen. You can enjoy nice & fresh roasting air inside while you are waiting your coffee. I couldn’t resist lure of french toast when I saw the menu, and I paid another 500 Yen and waited a plate of french toast. It was better than expected, bread is baguette and they contains plenty of milk & eggs. a little whip cream aside, overall not so sweat, you may feel miss something but I like this balance. I think the owner sets very reasonable prices thinking about popular sightseeing place like Kamakura. If you like the coffee you had, you can buy the beans。 This coming Sunday, May 17, including this café, 80 shops and restaurants around Yuigahama street will have an event, «border festival». People in this country calls«border» T-shirt as striped T-shirt. If you wear anything striped, you can enjoy 10% discount for coffee beans at this café for example, each shop offers its own something, if you are interested in joining this festival, why don’t you check their facebook page out!
