A small rice shop in the Tsukiji district that sells onigiri(aka Japanese rice«balls»), bento boxes, and small accompaniments like pickles. The counter is right on the street, under an awning, the triangular-shaped plastic-wrapped onigiri in a glass display case below. Additional items are inside the shop. Prices for onigiri were mostly ~150 yen for each, signs in Japanese only. Our picks were thus random; we ended up with both savory, in one the rice was a reddish hue and may have been cooked in a light tomato base. They were decent but not great onigiri by a long shot. The rice is too sticky and a touch overdone, and the seaweed was soft because it was already wrapped on the rice. Since they don’t prepare the onigiri upon ordering, this will always affect the onigiri quality. It is a surprise to say that convenience stores package them the right way, keeping seaweed and rice ingeniously separated. Flavors are fine. Since food isn’t prepared at the window, purchase is quick, the employees as efficient and courteous as Japanese service usually is.
