I love Dassai! Made my pilgrimage to their bar in Tokyo. Not glitzy… A small spot – a counter that seats maybe 10 or so and a few small tables. A modest menu for those that want to munch and fill their bellies. But you are not coming here to eat but to sample their sake! Dry sake with crisp and clean finish. Flawless! 3100 yen($ 26USD) for their trial of 5 of their sakes: Beyond, 23, 39, 48 and a sparkling sake. A fair price when you consider a bottle of Beyond goes for at least $ 200USD in Tokyo! This is how I sample my sakes. Start with the highest quality while the tongue is still sharp. Take a sip then move onto the next sake in decrease order of quality. Sip once then move onto another varietal. Easier to notice the nuances in each version this way. After my first round of sips and having sampled each version, I hop around randomly and drinking just sips of each… Alcoholic fun! Adjoining to the bar is their shop where they sell only Dassais… Bought a bottle of Dassai 23 for about $ 43 – about half the price it is retailed in the States. I actually preferred Dassai 39 in the taste test. Then why did I buy the 23? To share with my friends who will be more impressed with the 23 than the 39…
