I don’t get the hype and this is the of the best in maid cafes. First off our maid was great. Love her. No issue there. Sadly she left half way though our service. And to while at it, I’m amazed at how much of the staff spoke English. And while part of the experience is having to chant and repeat silly phrases that make no sense in Japanese with off hand movements to look like a cat, I just don’t get it(and I’m a level 42 otaku). Sadly all we saw for a menu was the mat in front of us which ranged from ¥1800−2600 per person, sadly the actual menus were well hidden to the side. I went with the ¥2600 package which includes chicken and rice curry that looked like a bear, melon soda, a headband of cat ears and a photo with out maid Note while iPhones and cameras are allowed in bit you can my photograph the maids at all. I get that the perverts do up skirting but I also get this is an easy way to charge an extra ¥500−1000; taking photos of the maid. Speaking of extra ¥500; the ¥500 seat charge is baffling to me. I would assume of you are ordering you’re not taking up space. So, to charge someone to sit is ridiculous hence the 3-star. It goes up to ¥1000 for a booth(they call sofa seating). This is per person so four people at a table is ¥2000 or ¥4000 for a booth! The show is pretty neat and of we had to tip in Japan, most otaku would be broke. I for one am glad of that. At the end of the day it was neat to try a maid café bit with my buddy I picked up the tab(on my own birthday to boot!) came to ¥6700. There’s a lot of places that offer s hell of a lot better food for that kind of yen, but maybe not with the experience.

I took a group of 12 to this maid café to experience this aspect of otaku/Akihabara culture first hand. I chose maidreamin because it takes reservations and this particular location because it’s easy to find and close to the station(tho’ there’s another one right next to the station so don’t get confused). It’s fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it over others. For what it’s worth, this was my fourth or fifth time at a maid café, always because I’m giving tours of Akihabara(I swear) and I wasn’t particularly impressed with this one. The staff are friendly but several lost character a few times(i.e., dropped the cutesy voice/act) during interactions. And the performance was disappointing compared with @home. Plus, almost all the customers seemed to be tourists, mostly from abroad. My last time at @home, it was closer to 50⁄50. Tourists keep these kinds of places afloat, so that’s fine, but it’s also fun to see real otaku geeking out with maids they like.(I love seeking people have a good time.) FWIW, the smoking section is a completely different floor so you don’t need to worry about smoke wafting over from a nearby table. They have English menus – didn’t see them in other languages, aside, of course, for Japanese. And you can make reservations online or over the phone. Cash only – or it was in my experience.
