A delicious and inexpensive tonkatsu specialty restaurant. As a Unilocaler, I really cheer on for establishments like Tonkatsu Imoya. It is one of those classic mom & pop operation where if the old man catches a cold, they will likely close the shop for the day. Husband cooks the tonkatsu(pork cutlet) while his wife takes orders and prepares the rice. MENU: 1. Hire-katsu(1000 Yen): Tonkatsu made with pork filet. It has less fat than roast. 2. Tonkatsu(800 Yen): Tonkatsu made with pork roast, which as a bit of fat. 3. Ebi-fry(900 Yen): Deep fried shrimp. 4. Sakana-no-moriawase(900 Yen): A combination of fried fish and shrimp. That is it. You need to choose between these 4 options. All breaded deep fried items. If you don’t want oily stuff, don’t come here. Your meal comes with miso soup, rice, and shredded cabbage. When you order, you can get fried fish or shrimp as an add on item for extra 150 Yen. WHATTOORDER: I recommend Hirekatsu. For some reason, the portion is more than regular Tonkatsu(see pics). SAUCE: You will find Tonkatsu sauce on the counter which you pour on to your katsu. Unlike some other places where you dip your katsu into a small dish with the sauce, you just pour it straight onto the tonkatsu. They also have mustard, which is optional usage. I recommend that you first pour the sauce onto one row of katsu, instead of making the entire dish wet. I did not see any dressing for the cabbage, so most people use the tonkatsu sauce for the shredded cabbage as well. PICKLES: On the counter is also free servings of takuwan radish pickles. Feel free to take as much as you like. REFILL: I don’t think you can as for refill of soup, rice, nor cabbage, like so of the tonkatsu chain restaurants. I did see a person asking for a big portion of rice, which was at a no extra cost. TASTE: I really enjoyed the crisp fried breading on the katsu. It wasn’t the type that just falls off of the meat. It stuck to the meat pretty well and stayed crispy throughout my meal. Hire-katsu meal at places like Wako and Saboten casts 1500 to 2000 Yen, so I found Imoya to be a bargain. ENGLISH: I highly doubt that mom nor pop speaks English. All you need to say is «Hire-katsu Onegaishimasu», so give it a shot.
