Good place for a quiet, relaxing dinner. Delicious food and friendly staff. We were searching around for a place to eat, when we spotted this old-style façade, and decided to pop in. Inside, we found a cozy little restaurant with a sushi bar and a single 2-top table. We sat at the sushi bar and were helped by a lovely woman whose name I didn’t catch. None of the staff speaks English, but we were able to get by with my limited Japanese skill(and the ability to recognize words like«Sashimi» and«Tempura»). We ended up ordering some beer, assorted sashimi, rice, and soup. The beer came out nice and cold, just the thing we needed after a hot August day walking around Ueno. Our sashimi was presented very beautifully, and consisted of mackerel, what appeared to be a kind of tentacle, a reddish fish that I couldn’t puzzle out, and some of the best tuna I’ve ever had. The rice was, well, rice, but the miso soup was great; chock full of these tasty little clams. As a sushi/sashimi fiend, I was impressed. The atmosphere was very congenial and friendly; there were a few customers who appeared to be regulars chatting and joking with the chef. The kind woman who was helping us tried to strike up some casual conversation, but my limited Japanese skill only let that go so far. Nonetheless, the warm and welcoming atmosphere was wonderful, and the food and drink great after a long, hot Tokyo day.
