I definitely enjoyed the food. The restaurant concept/ambiance was pretty straightforward and the service was good. It was easy as an English speaking tourist, the menus had good English translations and a staff person was able to answer questions. I got the Osteria Tasting Menu. We all started with an amuse bouche, which was one of my less favorite parts of the meal. It was a thin vegetable wrapped around a cheese or something, and just seemed like it could have been more flavorful. The appetizer, toasted bread with blue cheese, was one of my favorite things. It was a sweet bread and the combination with the salty melted cheese was delicious. The first course was an artichoke ravioli, which definitely had distinct and tasty artichoke flavor, which can be easy to overpower so I thought it was well done. My favorite part was the beef main, which was cooked well and had a delicious, subtly sweet wine sauce. The one low point was the desserts were all a little disappointing. Some of the folks I was eating with got the traditional tasting menu, which wasn’t as good as the osteria menu.

Looks like we saved the best til last. Great recommendation from our Hotel Antico Porto Leoni. The Osteria da Ugo was located only some 200 metres away but in a quiet side street so very convenient to our hotel. My partner and i took the Degustanzione Osteria menu for 37 euros. This included a Set menu of Prima Piatti-Fiori di Zucchini ripieni di Ricotta, Taleggio & Timo, Secondi Piatti of Tortelloni di Ugo, and main course of Lomberta di Vitello al Recipta bianco & Tartufo. Then your choice of one house Dolce/dessert. For 49 euros you would also get 3 glasses of wine chosen by the chef to pair with each course. We thought this was amazing value for money. We decided however to chose our own bottle of wine. There came some moments of wonder! To start came a bouche amuse of tasty spinach pie with white sauce. Then came the Prima Piatti. While Stuffed zucchini flowers are something i love to order but am mostly left disappointed by, these were just wonderful. These oh so fresh flowers were Generously stuffed with ricotta and talagio cheeses and presented on a bed of marinated tomato and sweet stoned local black olives which balanced the cheeses perfectly… soo delicious! My partner had asked of he could substitute with the Vitello Tonnato and they obliged. Our Secondi was the Tortelloni di Ugo and we both went into raptures, declaring it to be the best Tortelloni we have ever had! By comparison we found the Lombarta di Vitello(loin of Lamb) pleasant but not exceptional although the truffle sprinkled in top of the lamb was a tasty touch. It was served with chipped oven potatoes and bitter greens. I finished with a lack lustre Panne Cotta that was rubbery in texture and drowned in a too sweet berry coulis. That was the only criticism of what was a great last meal in beautiful Verona and for that reason i give it only 4 stars. But if you are in Verona you should not miss it!

Personnel charmant. Bref une super soirée.

Verona is such a beautiful city. A treasure, with its scenic Old Town, bicycle trails, majestic parks, cobbled roads, architecture and the Valpolicella wine region and Lake Garda near the outskirts of the city. This restaurant serves delicious pasta, with savory meat and fish dishes, with impeccable service, a great selection of wines, and delicious desserts. And a perfect location.

Osteria da Ugo, while not as grand as a ristorante(think all white linen and formally dressed wait staff) is at the top end of the next level. The main menu changes with each season in the Italian style of emphasizing ingredients that are fresh and peak flavor. An internal dining area is matched with a smoking allowed, outside, dining area. Each holds about 16×4 person tables. Dining noise, in the European custom, is minimal. Children are welcome. It gets 5* for succeeding completely at what it is trying to do. We were greeted cordially and offered a viewing of each seating area. Menus in both Italian and English were presented promptly and graciously and questions sought and answered in both English and Italian. We made reservations on a summer Saturday night while an Alpini festival was going on in Verona but wouldn’t have needed them. Although recommended by a local and opening at 7:30 to suit the foreign trade, it didn’t fill until 9:00PM. The menu follows the Italian custom of division into 5 Antipasti choices, 8 pasta or primi piatti, 10+ meats or seconding piatti including chicken, rabbit, pork, calf’s liver, duck, 5 beef options, tuna, and calamari and 4 vegetable and salad choices. They also offer two different, fixed price, four course, tasting menus for 35 and 30 euros each that, if paired with house chosen wine compliments, cost 40 and 45 euros. As expected, the wine list is heavily tilted towards the wines of the Veneto with 8 – 10 each of Valpoicelli Superiori, ripassi, and amarone. We had a wonderful Tedeschi Ripasso for 22 euro that opened nicely and kept us at the table another 20 minutes to finish it, after dessert was cleared. An «amuse bouche» of a thin slice of a vegetable fritatta was presented prior to the first course. We started our ordered meal with chicken liver pâté with onion balsamic compote and marinated salmon carpaccio. The pâté was two, flavorful, triangular, slices that were 2″ square, when combined, and ½″ thick. It was smooth with the texture and a hint of the flavor of butter. The compote was a tablespoon of thin sliced onion densely pickled in balsamic vinegar. This was served with 3 inch long half rounds of ¾″ thick, sliced, grilled, coarse crumb, white, toast. The salmon had 7 – 8 thin slices that were 1⁄16 of an inch by 2 inches by 6 inches with a house made mayonnaise and 6×¼ inch thick de-crusted triangles of a fine crumb toasted white bread. We split a plate of torelloni da Ugo(if you don’t recognize this, think of ravioli with 3 times the filling.) It was stuffed with a paste of cheese, egg plant, almonds, and herbs and was served on separate plates for us in an herbed butter sauce. We then split a salad Nicoise that was about 2 cups of mixed greens with 4 tablespoons of Italian tuna, a quartered hard boiled egg, 10 – 15 small Nicoise olives, 3−4×1 inch mozzarella balls, cut in half, 8 tomato slices, and 2 tablespoons of grated carrot with a vinegrette dressing. A pepper and a salt mill were at the table as well as bottles of aged balsamic and a fruity olive oil. The dessert menu doesn’t rotate with the seasons except those desserts featuring fruit are only offered in their season. We had a tiramisu(literally«pick me up»), and a lighter than air white cake with chocolate cream and blueberries between 3 layers. Our total bill, with wine included, was 82 euro.

Definitely one of the best restaurants we have ever eaten! We had pasta as a starter, one with lobster and one with mushrooms, both of them have been great! As a main course we took the beef filet in wine sauce and truffle. It was sheer poetry! Event the wine we ordered was delicious. The stuff is very friendly and prices are fair. I can highly recommend la Osteria da Ugo!

A good restaurant in the centre of Verona, near Juliet’s house. Don’t forget to taste«Pearà», a typical dressing for meats. Very nice!
