Big, hot, English — I guess I like my pubs like I like my guys. We stopped in for a burger of all things(don’t judge — after a week straight of pizza and pasta for folks who don’t typically eat carbs, a little slumming it was called for), and some potato croquettes and beers upon arriving into town too hungry to wait for dinner. We were there. We ordered food and had it served to us. That’s about all I can say — the experience was neither good, nor bad, it just was. The line to get in later was out the door, and had I known about the huge tapas buffet that would have made sense. It’s the spot where you come during your year studying abroad to get drunk and make out in some dark corner, and lord knows there is certainly a time and a place for that.

When you think of Italy, you don’t necessarily think of English pubs. But, in my experience, there’s actually some of the best pubs in the boot — albeit in a campy sort of way. English Empire, although a misleading name(wasn’t it the BRITISH Empire?) is definitely the premier pub in Italy’s premier university town. This huge pub goes on for days, which means there’s always a spot to crash down and catch a local football match or just catch up with friends. And watch out — at around 7pm they roll out a HUGE tapas-style buffet. Just an extra euro on top of your drink gives you access to the smörgåsbord. Just don’t get in the way of the hungry students that attack the snacks with gusto.
