Exactly what I hope for in a gastropub: great food(duck confit-yum), lovely staff, good selection of beers, and nice old-timey feel. A must-visit in Sligo.

So disappointing. Menu has changed since I was last here — for the worse. And the staff were impatient and rude. Never going back.

Definitely a real Irish Pub feeling. Dirty though. Slanted floor and Great Wall décor/old bottles etc. So happy we stopped here. We only had a quick pint of Guinness then continued on our journey.

We tend to drop in here when visiting Sligo. It’s a lovely pub, with private booths along the side. But, also very comfortable to hang round the front and have a bit of banter with the locals. Lovely, creamy Guinness. Your missing out if you don’t stop by this spot. Great, friendly staff.

A little warren of rooms with a surprisingly lovely, light and bright back patio, complete with cover to keep off that pesky rain. Food was good, I appreciated the farm connections on the menu. Even though the place was packed and we were only one of two tables on the back patio, service was quick. Love the little nook up front that was probably for women or clergymen — all of us folk that weren’t supposed to be seen in pubs once upon a time. History, good food, great central location? It’s a winner. Wish I had known about the craft beers though!

This place was on my radar well before getting to town. They’ve got craft beers from all over Ireland as well as the normal ones. The wines are from all over, they’ve just added a nice Albariño as well. We tried the bangers and mash with onion sauce and their own chips. Everything was great. They’re in the Good Food Ireland scheme as well. The even grow their own vegetables, greens, etc. All meats and fish are sourced locally.

There appear to be many, many good places to eat a meal in Sligo. For a town this size, it’s really quite impressive how many trendy, foodie, local, organic restaurants there are. Choosing one and only one is difficult, so hopefully this review can help you decide if Hargadons is for you. It’s old. It’s family-owned. The pub feels like a secret hideaway with so many snugs and nooks and crannies, you could be eating dinner beside your next door neighbor and not even know it. So if you’re looking for a romantic night, or an intimate dinner with friends, it’s actually quite perfect. There are several beers on draft, the most interesting of which is from a microbrewery in Cork called 8 degrees. A microbrewery in Ireland that serves somewhat hoppy beer! Amazing! The menu is gastropub and CHEAP. Ten euros for a meal of duck confit with blueberry sauce? Hip hip hooray! We had the duck confit and the beef burger. Both were outstanding. I had a glass of wine(this place is owned by the same people as Source Sligo, so the wine selection is the same), and marveled at the exellent selection at such a great price. And the plate of chips(real large chips, one platter is enough for two) was crispy, moist inside and perfectly salted. In summary: regal pub atmosphere with snugs, nooks and crannies; gourmet gastropub menu with excellent food; great tap selection(in Ireland); excellent reasonably-priced wine selection; good service. The only downside is that it is, after all, a pub. So if you want something a little different, it may not be for you.

Most towns in Ireland have a couple of «must go there» pubs if you’re from out of town and are visiting. I suspect Hargadons must be on the list for anyone visiting Sligo town centre. It’s a great layout — old style, retaining a classic look with probably a bit to modernisation done over the last few years. Passes the«feels real» test though that can be important if you’re partial to a good pub. Does food and of course, drinks. We only drank :-) Staff were great, and the snug was excellent(we caught it just as people were leaving, score! :-) Anyway — will be back and will try the food next time out.

I was starting to get disappointed by my overall food experience in Ireland, however Hargadons was the food highlight on my trip. We only had a short time in Sligo and we were rushed to get food. I was very pleased with the great fast service we received, and the waiter was very friendly. He even gave us some tips of places to go to. I had the goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes on homemade tomato bread served warm with tossed salad and onion chilli marmalade. The ingredients were so fresh and the combination of all the flavors, hot and cold temperatures, and textures worked perfectly. I could not even drink my Guinness because I was so focused on eating my great meal. I wish we had more time to spend in Sligo it looked like a cute little area.

My father and I recently visited Sligo, and stopped in Hargadons for dinner. We made our way to the back dining room. It was very small and cozy, but in my book, this is a plus, not a bad thing. I ordered an Irish cheese plate and a glass of wine, and highly enjoyed both. My dad ordered the duck with cabbage and a blueberry sauce, and I kept sneaking bits of cabbage off his plate because it was so tasty. Highly enjoyed our meal here, and it looked like the people having drinks up front were having fun, too.

I have to admit, we hit Hargadons on the wrong night, when everyone else was watching football in bars that had TV’s. However, we were hungry and never have cared about football, so there we were. It was just me and husband, eating some stellar seafood in an empty bar. Hargadon’s is part of a group of businesses called«Good Food Ireland», which means they have locally sourced, high-quality food. Husband had seafood paella, which was just perfectly seasoned, to not overpower the taste of the seafood, but still give that floral saffron scent. I had a big bowl of mussels in cream sauce. Maybe this is pretty standard fare around Ireland, but I’m from a place where fresh seafood is a real luxury, so take it for what its worth — I thought they were incredible. The portion was really huge, but between the two of us, we somehow managed to eat all of that delicious food. The prices are reasonable here, 10 – 15 euro for some upscale pub grub. The atmosphere is pretty touristy, with old-fashioned guiness posters all over the place, but sometimes touristy is fun. We had a great evening despite the lack of football, and I’d absolutely recommended Hargadon’s to a fellow food-loving traveler.
