We ate here a few times while staying at the D Hotel, with which it’s affiliated. The food is very good, albeit a bit bland for American tastes. The service is top-notch, polite and attentive. The drinks and beers are probably the best in Drogheda, and the atmosphere is a good Irish pub setting, with the most important sporting events on televisions throughout the bar area. When we sat at the bar, we could watch the bartender at work, and he was very good at craft cocktails, which you usually only see at high-end restaurants and not in pubs. For example, he flamed the orange twist for the cosmo to give the oils that toasted flavor. Our opinions of the food: The vegetable soup, like others we’ve had in Ireland, was completely pureed, with no visible vegetables, and quite bland, although not as watery as others we’ve had. The seafood chowder was much better. chunky with lots of seafood in it, and well seasoned although I had to add salt, which I hardly ever do. That was easy enough, though! The burgers were very good, with fried onion rings on them, cooked properly and well seasoned. The chips were tasty and cooked properly, but were so short as to be almost liked nuggets instead of chips. If you like that, fine, but it seemed like a lot of extra work to eat them. The cod fritters(fish and chips style) were good, but very bland, needing a lot of tarter sauce or malt vinegar. They host occasional parties in the room off to the side, and if they have live music, you get to hear it in the bar. That was a nice touch on our second visit! I’d eat there again, and certainly drink there again.

I stayed in the D hotel and came here for dinner once during my stay. The food was pretty good, I ordered the Teriyaki salmon for around 15 euro. The portion was quite small for the price. The description says it comes with bok choi and basmati rice, but it was only a about a spoon of rice and two leaves of bok choi! The salmon also didn’t taste like teriyaki at all. However, my friend ordered the seafood chowder which was fairly large, and I saw other orders for the burgers and steaks, and they were pretty generous with those too. I’m guessing fish Asian food isn’t their forte, as the portions for everything else are pretty massive. Other menu items include beef and Guinness pie, chicken supreme with risotto, bangers and mash, soups, salads, sandwiches and pasta. Atmosphere: Very nice, pretty large inside and just like any Irish pub really. Maybe not as crowded or noisy until later in the night, but I liked the usual bar feel it had to it. Also the music in the background is great. There is outdoor seating and a nice view of the river Boyne as well. Staff: Friendly and attentive, the food arrived pretty quick. No complaints here. Drinks: Great! They’ve got it all. My two star reduction is for the food and price of what I ordered, but for drinks, music etc… not bad!

Stopped in here before hitting the D hotel for a good night’s sleep. Impressive bar, wonderful décor, outstanding selection, but most importantly – the most wonderful people, both staff and customers! We had such a great time talking to folks we didn’t want to leave!

Cairnes always has great live music on a Saturday night. The local bands are young and play excellent covers, enough so that you are usually dancing by the end of the night. After the band has gone there is a live DJ to finish out the night. They also have pretty good pub food and plenty of options to choose from. The portions are large so be careful of over ordering. There is an out door seating along the river which i’m looking forward to checking out in the summer.
