Walked into Delahunty’s with my father after arriving in Roscrea the day before. The bar is huge! There is a long bar with stools and it opens up in the back with tables and even a pool table or two. My dad and I settle in for a pint of delicious Guinness, and we chat up in the bartender. My dad eyes the bartender and says ‘I think I know you, but I’m not certain. I haven’t been living here in nearly 40 years, but you look familar’. We enjoyed our afternoon Guinness, and the bartender went about his business as he set up for the day. After our second or third Guinness, the bartender walks over to us and says to my dad, «I recognize your voice! You and I worked on lurries together in the south of England in the late 1960’s. You must remember the Paddy fella that we worked with as well.» And so, my dad reconnected with an old friend within a day of arriving in Tipperary! It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. What a bartender, to remember someone some 4 decades later. Not to forget the delicious Guinness served here. I can’t wait to go back!
