Tansey’s

Maynooth is a student village really, but at the weekend over the Christmas break, when there are no students around, very little is open. In a hunt for breakfast in the shut-​down village, I happened upon Tansey’s which is down near the University. Outside seems to be the place where cyclists come to meet.
Tansey’s is rather small and seems to market itself for lunchtime wraps and soups, for which it has an extensive menu.
We were here for breakfast and while the full Irish seemed appealing both my dining mate and I both went straight for the pancakes and bacon with maple syrup, alongside an americano. At first, the pancakes seemed a little tough as they were made with crêpe batter but formed into small pancakes, however, the flavour was bang-​on and the bacon was so crispy, it all went together well! There was maple syrup in abundance which I love but it was just a tad much for my partner.
My two pieces of advice would be for them to serve the maple syrup on the side and either make large, thin crepes or use a more American-​style butter-​milk pancake batter, to up their breakfast to one that would have the masses returning.
They have cherry scones that I did not get to sample, so I will be back because the coffee was decent. (Bewleys, I think, but well made).
