A massive warehouse full of sexy bikes, no! An absolute cycling institution in Dublin, yes! A pure cycling shop(you’ll not find many triathletes shopping here!) in a cracking building at the bottom of Dundrum village, Joe Daly and his family have been selling bikes and their love of cycling for an absolute eternity. Personal touch is the name of the game and this place shows you don’t need to stock hundreds of absolute top-of-the-range Tour de France bikes to get the customers in the door. Brónagh has already mentioned it, but Stephen Roche did buy his first proper racing bike, a Raleigh 753 on which he won the Rás Tailteann in 1978, from Joe Daly himself and remained good friends with him throughout his career. When Daly passed away in February 2010, Roche referred to him as ‘a monument in Dundrum’. It is outside shop that the Orwell Wheelers(the largest cycling club in Ireland — ) meet most Sundays during the year, and with good reason — it’s one of the spiritual homes of the sport. Next time you’re about the area pop in for a chat and a browse about the store.

Yet another Dundrum institution. I Bought my bike on the bike scheme here a few months ago and it is without a doubt the best purchase I have ever made I have literally used my bike every day since I bought it(except for four days when I was out of Dublin) and I feel great! What was really great about my purchase though is where I bought it. David Daly was able to give me the best advice on which bike to get and he has given me advice on my bike since too, he remembered me and my bike too! You do not get this service in your local Halfords, Halfords is a shop that sells bikes Joe Daly’s is a proper bike shop. The people in here know bikes and use bikes and love bikes. You can ask any cyclist around Dundrum(and way beyond me would say) where they would go for bicycle advice and the will instantly answer«Joe Daly’s». I have heard many times that Stephen Roche got his first bike here and look how well he did!

Easily one of the most recognisable buildings on the city now and fast becoming a fav with the architecture students as well as cyclists… an odd mix but there you go, The building might be brand spanking new but Joe Daly cycles is a bit of an institution having been in business for about a gazillion years and catering to both the professionals and the keen armatures… even the not so keen armatures who just want to save a bit of petrol and ‘oh sweej jeebus why did they have to put a big ass hill in the middle of my route home’…
