It’s really a 3.5 out of 5. I dropped a mark because it’s not enough of an old man’s pub to pull off the very quiet atmosphere inside. However, they do have a very good selection of drinks and it is where I first ytasted Aspalls cyder(it was spelled with a ‘y’…it had to be good!). The side that is on the way up to Bloomfields shopping centre is a sun trap for the odd occasion the sun turns up and can be a gem of a place for a few summer evening pints. I like the place and they should be given a badge for that very fact.

One of the few family-owned and operated pubs left in Dun Laoghaire. Tv and sport in the back bar. Tranquility in the company of occasional eccentrics in front. Good pub grub too. Excellent pint.

Dunphy’s, as I recall, are pretty strict on ID, this doesn’t effect me much these days but back in my teens, when I used to drink in Dun Laoghaire of a Saturday night, this was the bane of my existence. Sure, there were other places that if you told them you were 18 would more than likely to take your word for it but sometimes they’d get all stroppy when you fell down the stairs or something. Then you’d be at the mercy of pubs like Dunphy’s with their iron fist door policy and would always end up having to sit on a bench at the dart station waiting for your friends to finish up. Still, it was great fun trying to pull the wool over there eyes so four stars.

I would prefer to just have a drink in Dunphy’s rather than eat. I have had lunch here, but it’s never been great — it’s mainly soup and sandwiches and the soup tastes like it might have been helped along with a packet. That said, the Guinness is good and there are seats outside, which are great for chilling out in during the summer. It’s right beside a shopping centre so you can people watch as you sip your drink. I’ve done this a few times and it’s a lovely way to pass an afternoon.

If ever there was a pub that was saved by its location. Dunphys was an unassuming pub that was known to it’s locals… and that’s about it. Then one day somebody with a lot of money decided to build a big pointless shopping centre(Bloomfield) and a lovely Cinema(IMC) right next door. Now Dunphys boasts one of the best locations in the town, as numerous punters stroll in and out of its doors with a few minutes to spare while they wait for a movie or celebrate the end of a successful day in tescos!(dont you celebrate tescos?) The atmosphere is old man pub but with a touch of class(thanks to the outdoor area and the non-local clients brought in by the cinema etc. However if you stay here for long enough and have a look around you will feel a little out of place if you don’t assert yourself like you belong there. had a great time here watching the Wimbledon final here one year… not one of the locals had a clue what was going on but enjoyed it all the same.

Mmmm, Dunphy’s. It is with a heavy heart that I must start by flouting the rumours, the hearsay and the old wives tales that surround this pub. It is said that Dunphy’s serves the finest pint of Guinness in all of Christendom-this is not true, but they are very good. They’re even better before or after a trip to the cinema, or like the ladies in the photo, on a fine summers day. Dunphy’s is great, but don’t expect to go on the pull. This is decidedly an old man pub.
