Great selection of wine and beer. The shop is nicely laid out and has a really nice feel to it, I like going in even just for a quick browse.

I needed a specific Jameson(Crested Ten) and Whelans had it. I was glad because I had already tried Carvills… it was looking like I needed to go further a field. But thanks to Whelans, I didn’t have to go far. Another bonus was after a brief chat with the guy in the shop, he threw in a gift bag to present the bottle in AND a Jameson branded glass. How nice was that? This was after he explained the difference between Crested Ten and other Jameson whiskeys. He knows his whiskeys.

I just did a price comparison and Whelan’s is cheaper than Dunnes on almost everything. Get in!

Anywhere that gives you a discount on alcohol for being a student is my kind of place. Fair enough, it is only 5% off, but when it brings a shoulder of dodgy vodka to under a tenner, you leave the place smiling. The shop is extremely small and as a result doesn’t have a huge amount of stock. Not a great selection of wine, but they have a few decent varieties of imported beer. There is of course the infamous house wine, which if memory serves comes in at € 5.49. You’ll forgive me if I’m wrong, as I don’t remember much of the night I bought it. My taste buds the next morning however, certainly did. Avoid it at all costs. Whelan’s would be a fairly standard off licence if it wasn’t for the student discount, so if you’re not a student, it’s nothing really special. But they do sell Animal Bars, something that can only add to the experience of buying booze.

Decent offy right next door to the wonderful Whelans. They have some great deals on bargain basement wine, but in my experience that wine is in that bin for a reason… my advice to all you winies out there — pay the extra 2 or 3 euro and get yourself a decent wine! The range here is nice enough, that’s for sure. I’ve noticed they also have 99 cent beer specials, but you know what you’re getting there ;-) Nice chilled out service too.

This is a really cute, ‘traditionally Irish’ little off licence. And when I say little, I mean tiny. But, saying that, they have everything you need. Manys a time I’ve stopped in here and picked up some vodka and a few bottles of pear Kopparberg(the Kopparberg was used as the mixer for the vodka. DONOT try this at home kids), or a bottle of the cheapest wine on offer for a mad college night out. The interior is lots of wood and random bottles of booze in big baskets scattered along the floor.

Although small in size, this off license does have a lot to offer. They always have a great offers on beer and they even offer a student discount of five percent. You can find some nice beers that you wouldnt get in places like spar or tesco. Its also great for bands playing in Whelans because they can buy a box of beer to stock the band room. They also have a little basket with bottles of beer for a euro. its in a great location but there are several other off licensees around the area. Although Whelans Off Licence is cheap it is a very small shop and stock is limited. There wine selection is also very limited.
