It’s interesting to read a comment from another reviewer about the variable quality and slower service in Surma. I’ve had the same experience. I used to go there with some friends quite often, but stopped when the wait for lunch was longer than I had time available at lunchtime. The lunch menu is fairly static. Four starters including one vegetarian dish, and four mains including one vegetarian dish. There’s not much rotation and It’s not the most exciting taste you will find in an Indian restaurant. We used to joke that the different dishes differed slightly by color only, so ask for any of them randomly. The restaurant itself is clean and has a nice feel to it. It’s usually empty or near empty at lunch time. The staff are polite and pleasant, as you might expect in most Indian restaurants. However, one of two we have encountered a while ago could do with a few tips on service. Putting a spoon or fork that you have just dropped on the floor back on the table for the customer is not good. At least, disappear behind a curtain, turn around and come back out with it!

A group of us from the office use to frequent Surma every Friday for lunch. But about two years ago we stopped because the food went downhill drastically. But today we decided to try it out again to see if things had improved. Another reason for coming was because we knew the lunchtime service in Surma is a lot quicker than the other Indian restaurant in the area, where you knew you would not be in and out in under an hour. The place got a bit of a refurb since we were last here and I think the new location of the bar really adds to the place. The rest of the décor is more or less the same, but it was always nice. The table and chairs are really nice and comfy. For starters I went for the Onion Bhajee. And it really disappointed. It should be crispy and crunchy, but it was pasty and dull. The main was better, but nothing to write home about. Apologies for not remembering the name of the main, I cannot find it on a menu of theirs that I found online. But it was the hottest chicken dish on their lunch menu, which is what I usually get on these occasions. It was great value though at 10EUR for the starter and main. I think you get ice cream too. You definitely get tea/coffee.

We stopped here for a late lunch while sight-seeing in Dublin. We ordered from the relatively inexpensive lunch menu. The food was delicious and freshly prepared, the service was quite attentive, and the dining room was beautiful. We both had the lamb-lentil patties as appetizers, while he had the lamb curry and I had the chicken ghobi as a main course. I loved my chicken — I just wish it had had a few more pieces of cauliflower. However, this meal really hit the spot. Give Surma a try.
