Nellys is great spot if you’re looking for a good cup of coffee and sandwich. The café is small(only fits around 10 people) with one communal table, a few chairs at the window bench and a single table outside. They also stock a small selection of pastas, seeds, nuts etc.

There are a lot of places to eat around my office but I try and add to the rotation when I can. I stopped by Nelly’s last week and it was just as cute as the pictures. Chalkboard menu with a few small tables inside and outside. I wasn’t in too much of a hurry so decided to dine in. I ordered the bacon and brie ciabatta and helped myself to some water before taking a seat. Maybe 5 minutes later my sandwich came out. In addition to the lovely bacon and brie it had a sweet tomato chutney of sorts that really brought everything together. It was also a sizeable sandwich so it gets another few points for good value. Overall this was a nice experience and is a great lunch option for anyone working nearby.

Yet another terrific spot to come read or just relax over a cup of coffee. The communal table makes the café so warm. There are stools against the walls and windows. It’s very colourful inside and has that quirky Scadanavian feel to it. I got the kale soup which came with brown bread for € 4 and a cup of black coffee for € 2.20. Of course I finished it all off with a wheat free brownie for € 2.50 which was at max chocolate levels. The music was great and it was a great spot to catch up with an old friend and realise that we still are pretty useless at this thing called life.

Everybody knows the feeling you wake up way too late and in need of the black morning gold but no time or out of coffee because labor is calling you… Luckily help is on the way in my case in form of Nellys in Portobello. Perfect between home and bus stop or on a sunny day on my morning walk to work. Their cappuccino woke and cheered me up the other odd and busy morning. But not only during my morning hassle I like to go there to treat myself with their self-made yummy gluten free orange cake or get the gluten free cookies they offer. All in all I really like the set up and friendly atmosphere of this charming and welcoming place.

It’s one of those little heavens that are evil when it’s summertime and you only have an hour’s break :-D oops didn’t see time flying, I thought we had lost time ! Don’t be in a rush when you enter it anyway, whether you want to eat in or grab a lunch. Great little eatery with a selection of soups, sandwiches and cakes. It’s excitingly creative and tasty, and the staff are just as nice as the deco… quite a homely feel to it. Pricewise, it is quite what I would expect for the ingredients used. I did find the orange cake of great taste but way too dry, but apart from that, it was wonderful ! If you feel inspired for similar high quality food for home, they have quite a large selection of basic ingredients like rice, flours, teas, and all sorts of italian foods if I remember well, that you can bring home.

I write this glowing review with hesitation, purely for the selfish desire of keeping it a little-known neighborhood jewel. But here we are. The interior of Nelly’s can best be described as the antiquated, overstocked farmhouse you wish your granny had. The prices are reasonable(€ 6.50 for two full tea pots of jasmine and regular tea & a brownie that will make your pupils dilate), & their groceries range from the semi-standard organic/spelt/fairtrade fare to the rarer oddities(Mushroom ketchup? Redcurrant and port jelly? Canadian maple syrup? Whole anise seeds, figs, and vanilla beans? All here, my curious friend). You’ll be in good company, too. The aproned workers are ever-so polite, and your fellow patrons will be ever-so courteous as they read the paper next to you or speak in intimate voices to one another. If these sound like your kind of people, you’ll feel right at home.
