I’m conflicted writing a review of Gammells, I really want it to be a successful underdog story. The café reminds me of so many awesome, independent cafes scattered in villages across Ireland — too many options for food, incredibly friendly staff, great value and a lovely experience. But on the other hand the food just isn’t able to compete with some of the other incredible options in the food paradise of Ranelagh. I appreciate this isn’t exactly a hipster brunch venue, but the quality even soup and a sandwich isn’t as good as it could be. I guess I’d recommend here as a cheap and quick place for a coffee, with nice buns and cakes to take-away. And the staff are super-cool!

So the staff are a little reserved. So I’d recommend take out to eat in. The rocky road is out of this world. As are the red velvet cupcakes. Most of the cakes/treats are unreal. Food not too bad. Great pricing.

Gorgeous little shop on the corner of the Ranelagh Triangle, pretty much right opposite Lidl. The décor is very basic, but foolish is the man who let’s it pass them by on account of that! First and foremost, the food is all fresh, and from what I’ve had to date, it’s all delicious. They specialise in baked treats that looked like they have come straight out of Mrs. Gammell’s 1980’s kitchenette and into their display fridge. They also sell food goods like specialities perserves, nice food hampers and gift boxes of delicious chocolate and cupcakes. My last little plug for Gammells is that the staff there are consistently friendly and courteous. I just want to pick up the lovely smiley man who runs this place and keep him in my pocket forever!

Gammells was the highlight of my trip to Dublin. Really. We stayed around the corner and wandered around to Gammells a couple of times. It fit our stereotypical picture of a cute little Irish shop, and the food offerings of sausage rolls, cornish pasties, stew, etc. were traditional enough to satisfy my husband. I had one of their quiches, and we bought a variety of pastries as well. You can’t go wrong, really, and you can also get tea or coffee or wine. There are a few little tables for dining in, and it was there that we ended up chatting with the owner, Mr. Gammell. Initially I thought he was just another diner, and soon his dry humor had us in stitches of laughter. It was just such a wonderful atmosphere and they sent us home with leftover pastries. Mr. Gammell, thanks for your humor, hospitality, and good food!

For a quick bite in Ranelagh, nothing compares. Their case displays pastries and sweets galore, but also more substantial fare. Sandwiches, of course, and sausage rolls(€ 2,50!). I’ve seen some reviewers comment on the prices, but I found them to be reasonable, especially compared to the neighboring establishments. But the showstopper was the Cornish Pasty, which they made with pork rather than beef. I thought that it was a very successful twist.

I was on my way over to my parents and I passed Gammells and its window of beautiful baked goods. I just got custard slices for the family. I have to say I was a little disappointed — they were not as nice as I thought they’d be, but they were still pretty good. Not cheap either!

Came down here after reading very good reviews. Little hungover so that explains me geting soup, sandwich, apple strudel and a chocolate muffin. The soup was really nice. Hit the spot. Sandwich was a pre made chicken salad and was only ok. Apple strudel was nice but we got it take out and he heated it up with ice cream. Would have been nicer if we had it there. Chocolate muffin was unreal with a chocolate sauce on the outside .mmm MMM. My mate got a breakfast roll. Cant go wrong. He said the chocolate éclair was very nice. God im a sad git. I now go to places and pay attention. The music in there was very good and the lad behind the counter was sound. Had a good laugh with him. The first thing I saw in the window was sex though. I doubled back on that. Sex and the city cupcakes. Bit mad

What do you get the birthday girl? You do a Maire Antoinette and let her eat cake. So that’s exactly what I did. It was like stepping back in time for all the right reasons. It reminded me of a local bakery that my Mam would take me to every other Friday after primary school. I would get to pick a chocolate éclair, oh my Lord I was so giddy with the expectation of it. Then came the long drawn out process of me licking away all the cream before I got to devour the chocolate on the pastry — utter heaven. That is why I give it 5 stars because it’s rare to find an old fashioned Irish bakery these days. The set up of this bakery harks back to the good auld Irish bakeries, nothing fancy, just good honest products. Cream slices, meringues, black forest gateaux etc. Stuff that seemed so posh at the time but now is oddly retro and fashionable again like the Rose of Tralee! Seems popular with the breakfast crowd, also a nice spot for lunch. What about the birthday girl? Yup she was thrilled with her morning cake surprise… Mmm cake for brekkie — now this is the life!

This place became something of a tradition in my family. when i was a little girl my dad would drive me down here every Sunday without fail. we would get out of the car and into Gammels where we always got a baguette and something nice like an éclair or a meringue. then we would get back into the car and drive home where we would have a tasty lunch that included our goodies from Gammels. this was a very forward shop in its time, bakeries like this were not easy to come by. now you can find more places imitating this shop but none of them will ever live up to the greatness of this Ranelagh bakery and none of them will have long standing traditions between them and family’s who will drive miles just to buy their bread.

I first noticed the delightful cupcakes in the window when I used to walk past every day. And they taste as nice as they look as well, yummy and light and airy. It’s a real treasure trove where you can find Irish jams, sausages, breads and other baked goods. The food is beautifully presented and reasonably priced and the staff are really nice. When they’re not too busy they’ll help you pick goodies for presents and goodie baskets. This shop is not just for foodies but if you have friends, who are really into food this is a good place to find nice presents or treats for them.

I remember when the notion of gourmet was something of a foreign concept in Dublin years ago, Gammells was an exotic feature of Ranelagh. That said, any time I bought stuff in there I was disappointed and surprised at the high price. It struck me as the sort of place where everything looked delicious but actually wasn’t at all. I’d not been there in ages until recently when I popped in with some friends for takeaway coffee, which I must say was really good. It was just after lunch too and they had some pastries left over that they were trying to get rid of and they gave them to us! We ended up going back to the office with treats for everyone. The funny thing is that this free food was nicer than anything I’ve ever paid for in there! And we were all delighted with the fact that we were given it free of charge. Gammells went miles up in my estimation after that.

During the festive, celebratory seasons such as Easter and Christmas the windows of Gammells glow with an array of cakes decorated in concurrence with the theme of the season. They are presented on ornate cake stands with a flurry of bows, artificial snow and weaved hampers adding to the novelty. The whole shebang looks divine and always brings a smile to my face and warm glow to my tummy. Out of the holiday season an array of what are advertised as ‘Sex in the City’ cupcakes take precedence in the window. For € 2 each you are treated to a sumptuous cupcake, with a bouncey sponge and utterly delectable soft and creamy icing on top. The icing on these cakes is always very vibrant and usually consists of electric blues, deep pinks and bright greens. Their savoury offerings are just as good with sausage rolls and meat pies to wet the appetite. There isn’t very much seating within the premises itself and so I have always eaten mine walking home but this in no way detracts from the quality of food and attention to detail.

Great little place by the triangle in Ranelagh. Their cakes and tarts are fab, and I can’t go in there without coming out with a cornish pasty or a slice of quiche. Portions are big, so you get what you pay for. They also serve coffee and wine(though I have never had the chance to eat in). Great to have a local bakery close by, and it’s nice to know you’re helping an Irish business. I’d definitely recommend Gammell’s for no nonsense, solid grub. I think that in writing this I may have talked myself into a walk to Gammell’s to pick up something tasty for lunch… :)

Gammell’s is something to be really proud of if you’re Irish and a great place to bring people that are here on holiday. You could walk around Dublin for weeks, probably, and never see any premises that doesn’t have the roots or origins of it’s central concept abroad. Sometimes it leaves you wondering, is there anything here at all I couldn’t find elsewhere? Well, the answer is yes. Gammell’s. Gammell’s is steadfastly and quintessentially Irish in some way. It’s dawning on me how difficult it is to say exactly what makes it so Irish, but I know it is. Sure, they have bakeries and tea shops in Vienna and London, but it’s more the arrangement and the juxtaposition of everything that make Gammell’s so great. Am I wrong in thinking that éclaires and meringues, though French, when taken with a cup of tea, become Irish? It certainly feels that way and an English friend I brought there agrees. So, have a sausage roll and a cup of tea, over the Irish Times in Gammell’s, keep the kids quiet with a meringue and a can of Club Orange, and feel what it’s like to be Irish for the first time in ages.

Gammell’s is an honest to goodness Irish bakery on Ranelagh triangle. It’s windows are always full of fabulous looking treats. I can recommend their chocolate cake and any of their pies(rhubarb is my favourite) but their savouries always tempt me too. They do lovely quiches, sausage rolls and they also make a good sandwich. They usually serve soup at lunch time too and have some ready made meals in their fridge. They really shine at Easter and Christmas when their window is full of Easter eggs of all sizes and shapes and cakes and mince pies for Christmas. Gammell’s also do hampers for presents if you like. They’re super nice and will always give you the freshest slice or the bun that’s straight out of the oven. Mmmm.
