This place was nice for our group to meet at, but it was quite far to travel on foot from DCU. Thankfully there are busses! It’s a very roomy place and I think at some point between sunrise and sunset they serve food at this establishment, though I wasn’t able to order anything because the kitchen was closed and it was only 8 p.m. They don’t accept laser or credit cards and that makes me sad. I had enough cash to get three pints… but I like to open a tab and get drunk without thinking of the financial repercussions.

The Big Tree pub attracts a rowdy crowd of sports fan and college students because it is situated in Drumcondra and near Croke Park. Sunday, also known as match day, is by far the best time to visit if you want to mingle and get wrapped up in rugby fever. The pub is also a good place to catch live performances. The interior is very big and there’s a decent stage. The musicians play and sing mostly pop or rock. Ladies, expect also to be approached by men on the prowl. Beer gives men in the Big Tree liquid courage and if you come her with your girlfriends, the guys will take it as a sign that you’re available. The times that this has happened to me, the men were not mean but just a little too arrogant.

This happened a little while ago now, but at one stage I was seeing a girl up on the North Circular Road, and one evening we decided to go to The Big Tree for a drink. And I know what you are going to say: «The Big Tree on a date? What are ya, mad, or what?!» All I will say is that it was just down the road from her house, and neither of us were that fussed about going too far afield. The place was fairly empty that evening, despite it being Sunday, but there was still some banter to be had, as I shall now recount. I headed up to the bar to get the first round in(gentleman that I am), and while I was waiting for the drinks, I got talking to an older gentleman(he was wearing a Sligo jersey, and his county had been beaten resoundingly earlier that day). We chatted about GAA for a while, and then he told me that I looked like«the fella who presented the Big Brother thing, you know yer man». Russell Brand, I suggested(I have long hair and stubble, otherwise I have little or no resemblance to Russell Brand). «Yes», he replied, and we had a good laugh. I then returned to the table with the drinks, and I had no sooner sat down when a lad walked past and called over, «Hey Ziggy, good luck on the Big Brother thing». It should be noted at this point that I do have some passing resemblance to Ziggy from Big Brother 8, though not as much as this man was making out. But I digress. I suppose the moral of this rambling story is that The Big Tree is good for the craic, particularly if you look vaguely like any currently en vouge z-list celebrity.

The road to Croker is frought with many dangers-several of which are public houses. And this is one of the best. Expect a nice, but predominantly blue and navy, mix on matchdays. Also expect a surprisingly good looking crowd-no, really, I was very pleasantly surprised. Under normal non-matchday circumstances the Big Tree is good for students and locals alike. Very nice pub, the smoking area is cracking too.
