Well, this place is not exactly like the Yun Yan Pavilion when it was in Tsim Sha Tsui. I think it has lost much of its former quality. Nonetheless, this review is not about nostalgia over the old place. The quality of food is good and has the essence of the Sichuan cuisine, even though it also mixed in other Chinese regional dishes. The 水煮魚 was deliciously spicy and is on par with any good Sichuan restaurants. Other dishes were good but did not stand out. The décor was modern looking and clean. Our table was one of the larger tables, but does not have a turntable. So it was difficult to reach some of the dishes on the other side of the table. For me, it was the service that marked the place down. Many of the waiters just simply did not appear to have to heart in their jobs. They were not helpful or very responsive to questions on the menu. When serving food, they also rushed to put all the dishes out all at once, with no discernible order. Some of the main courses arrived before the appetisers! Overall, not very enjoyable dining experience.

Went to Yun Yan for hot spicy Szechuan food. They also offer some Shanghai dishes which have more delicate flavors. Dandan mian the signature Szechuan noodle dish was reasonably hot, but this is the home food version without the peanut sauce, it was ok. Their xiao long bao adds a wrinkle. The top has an opening and you can insert your vinegar using the plastic straw which they supply. The bao is also full of juice and you can manage to eat it from the porcelain spoon savoring all the juice. The fried small mantou(see pic) is also a desirable Shanghai dish. It doesn’t have soup squirting from it as you bite, but the taste is ok. Cute they bring it out with one upside down so you can see the crisp bottom. The chicken in wine was good, as was the tofu skin stuffed with veggie. It was a lot for two Two other points of interest: the food is served in nice pottery dishes, very nice. I feel it tastes better. Yun Yan also uses rice bowls for drinking booze. This is an old Chinese practice. Their bowl is plastic with logo on the bottom, see pic. This is a busy place but with a very clean rest room. The entire décor is in dark wood(Szechuan) and appealing. In the mood for hot food? Worth a try here. I’m told they made the Michelin gourmand list this year.
