If you ask just about anyone who’s been to Yardbird, they’ll tell you it’s really good. Take their word for it. Tucked away from just about any sign of foot traffic on Bridges Street in Shun Wan, you’ll be amazed at how many people pack into this restaurant. They don’t take reservations. When you check in, the host will put a little sticker on you, then you attempt to carve out a square foot to enjoy your drink in. The cocktail menu features Japanese specialties that are fresh, sometimes fruity, sometimes savory, but very delicious. But the star of Yardbird is the food. I can’t imagine how many deep fried corn balls they have to make every night, but you must get them. Everyone does! There’s also a huge list of yakitori choices that I look forward to sampling more of in future trips. Finally, there are beautiful fried rice dishes with a variety of ingredients. Do yourself a favor– prepare for the worth-it wait and get yourself over here.

Popped into Yardbird on the last day of my trip in Asia. I was exhausted, dehydrated and pretty ready to head back to Chicago to be quite honest. My buddies who live out in Hong Kong told me I had absolutely had to check out Yardbird before I left Asia… Japanese food in Hong Kong didn’t sound like the best idea, but i figured yolo. We tried the chicken knee, chicken rib, fried corn ball tings and a bunch of other stuff I don’t remember haha. The food was absolutely phenomenal. Actually, everything about Yardbird was was really special. The neighborhood it’s located in is really gorgeous, the staff provided probably the best service I recieved on my whole trip in Asia and the food was just packed with flavor and worth every penny/minute we waited for our table. If there’s a long wait for a space i def suggest grabbing a drink and waiting. Since this spot is Japanese inspired they have a large selection of Japanese whiskeys and sake. I drank 3 of their homemade whiskey lemonades and they were super yummy. I def suggest taking a cab here, the neighborhood is up in a mountain and probably really hard to navigate if you’re a tourist like me lol. Highly highly suggest yardbird for anyone visiting Hong Kong for sure.

Outstanding service and fantastic cocktails. The places looks small from the outside, but there are two floors to the restaurant/bar. It’s a perfect place to go with friends at the end of the night, or even a nice spot to go to on your own during the evening. The servers are all very attentive and are well educated on what’s on the menu(as they should be, but so many establishments fail to exhibit that amongst their servers). Great find, wonderful place.

It only took me a few years before I got around to trying Yardbird, but it really did live up the hype. There are lots of items on the menu to order and most are small dishes, so you’ll be able to try a variety of items and I highly encourage you to do so. The sweet corn tempura and chicken wing skewer were my favorites. Some of the dishes are a lot bigger(korean fried cauliflower), so just make sure to ask the server if you have ordered too much/too little. The servers here are so nice and helpful! They were really good about giving us their recommendations and checking on us, the staff itself is five stars! The best part is the seasoning on the table, throw it on everything you order! When you leave, they give you a small packet of the seasoning to take home with you. It’s soooo good! I want to order this in a bottle! My only issue with this place is that there are no reservations and the wait is sooooo long. So really, be prepared to wait(our wait was 1.5+ hours!). Also, I recommend you come in no more than a group of 4.

Delicious Japanese yakitori place, with a variety of other items. Don’t just focus on their meat. I find their meat a bit tough, and not as good as could be. Some of the sauces can be a bit salty as well. The highlight is in the appetizers, sides, and rice dishes. The sweet corn tempura and KFC(Korean fried cauliflower) are both savory, fried just right, and super delicious. The chicken and egg rice is hearty, crispy, and very shareable. Forget the yakitori, I just want to indulge in all these sides and would be a happy person with a full belly after that! Apart from the meat, the other reason it hasn’t got five stars is because of the interior(it gets toasty sometimes!) and the prices. This is easily one of the most expensive non-fancy meals I’ve had!

This hip place has great modern Izakaya dishes prepared with mainly chicken, and cool upbeat music and atmosphere. They don’t take resos and even at 9:30 pm on a Wednesday, we still had to wait 30 mins for a table, so come early or you can hangout at the bar while you wait for a seat. You need to start with the sweet corn tempura for sure. The standout dishes would be the yummy yakitoris like the ume thigh and the meatballs! The KFC(Korean fried cauliflower) was good, but just one or two pieces were enough. Don’t forget to squeeze the lime on it! Our server was cool and friendly and suggested most of these dishes which was really helpful. Most of the servers were expats. They’re all very friendly and service was great so don’t forget to tip them well! I would definitely recommend this place and will come back for sure. I would also love to go to their other sister locations Ronin and Sunday’s Grocery.

After watching an episode of «I’ll Have What Phil’s Having» on PBS back home before coming to Hong Kong, we decided we needed to pay Yardbird a visit for dinner. Since they do not accept reservations, we planned and arrived just before their 6pm opening time to find one other family already in line ahead of us. Our taxi driver had trouble finding the place and ended up dropping us about two blocks away. It was a bit of a challenge getting Google Maps to direct us the final short distance as our GPS signal was bouncing off the tall buildings all around but we made it. There is sitting available on two levels and we were offered our choice upon entering. We picked downstairs as that affords a view of the kitchen area and all the associated goings on. The wait staff here at Yardbird are quite pleasant and speak excellent English. They fielded all our menu questions with ease and offered their suggestions and strategies to attack the menu. I suggest heeding their advice for your first visit as it can be difficult to gauge the portions. For our initial starters, we choose the cucumber salad and sweet corn tempura. The salad was quite yummy and a perfect size for sharing with my wife. The sweet corn balls recommended by the server were equally good but I have yet to find corn in Asia to revile what I can get back home in Virginia. Under the Yakitori section of the menu, we choose the meatball with raw egg(another recommendation), the oyster and the thigh. These are all chicken dishes that come on a skewer despite their name. The meatball was one per skewer and a decent size. The egg comes in a separate bowl with sauce that you mix up with the skewered meat for a wonderfully delightful flavor. Definitely my favorite dish of the evening. My wife was familiar with the oyster meat of the chicken found near the backbone but it was news to me. They were quite tasty though and another favorite for the meal. Our last Yakitori dish was the thigh with welsh onion. Very juicy and flavorful chicken as well. Under the bigger section of the menu we selected another server recommended dish the KFC. That’s not actually chicken despite the name but rather deep fried cauliflower. It comes with a bit of chili and hence heat but it was delicious and I am one to shy away from cauliflower whenever I can. I overheard the table next to us ordering the fried chicken prepared in this format as well and I bet that would be an awesome dish. We toyed with the idea of getting the Scotch Egg but weren’t feeling quite adventurous enough and picked the chicken and egg rice dish instead. This dish is plenty for two to share and an excellent option with crispy chicken skin and peas. They have quite a few cocktails that you can order as well as wine to go with dinner. We opted for some local beers instead and sparkling water. All in all, we had a great dining experience and wonderful meal. Go early to snag a table and heed your server’s recommendations for a great evening out.

One of my two favorite meals in HK! Luckily we were sat right away although it filled up pretty quickly. It was a great vibe, with great service. The highlights were definitely the meatballs, chicken wings, KFC, and chicken/egg rice. Honestly we couldn’t believe how the meatballs were so flavorful and so juicy!

Yardbird ended up being a mixed bag for the boy and I. It’s definitely a nice, trendy place(think LA/SF trendy, most resembling AL’s Place, in my opinion). However, a fairly expensive meal with subpar service had us leaving with a bitter taste in our mouths, unfortunately. THEGOOD. + IZAKAYA Pork belly excluded, we had some truly incredible skewers(expensively priced at $ 5 per individual skewer). 99% of their izakaya menu is chicken-based, and their creations are absolutely phenomenal. A pricey but delicious dinner would start and end with these skewers. THEMEH. ~ THEKFC(KOREANFRIEDCAULIFLOWER) This dish, which was so highly raved about, was so entirely average in my eyes. It’s a battered cauliflower floret in BBQ sauce & sesame seeds, basically. THEBAD. — SERVICE While our waiter initially was outstanding, we had some pretty awful service shortly after sitting down. A large table comprised of friends/family of the kitchen staff & servers arrived ~15 minutes after we had been seated and placed our orders. From the moment they sat down, their orders were prioritized 100%. We watched dish after dish be brought to them, while we waited an hour for even our first izakaya skewer to be brought to our table. I have to say, this made the experience much less enjoyable, and I was tempted to just walk out at one point. I can definitely appreciate treating your friends a little bit better than other customers, but the way Yardbird did was a little insulting(especially considering how expensive our meal was). Even awful service aside, it did feel like the meal was just far too expensive for what you get. I’m glad I went if only to have crossed it off my list for next time. PROTIP: No reservations are taken, but arriving ~20 minutes before opening should be more than enough time to secure you a seat for the first seating. We showed up 35 minutes early, and were standing alone for quite some time!

I found Yardbird cute, homey, and less hip than the owner’s other establishments – and despite a very trendy location in hobbling distance from hip bars and expensive hotels. Some things were stellar, some things were just okay. There are two Hong Kongs for food: one where you go for an Anthony Bourdain-inspired back-alley discovery and an other where you rub elbows with the young, well capitalized, and beautiful. For a city so geographically small, HK offers a rich supply of both. Yardbird is hip, decidedly English speaking(I don’t even think they have a Cantonese menu to glance at), and preys on the city’s love of Japanese food with yakitori and other treats that fuse Japanese flavour profiles to more Western cooking techniques and approaches. When that works, you get something like a deep fried corn fritter, with a gentle, light tempura batter creating something is at once reminiscent of a Southern American state fair much as it is Japanese street food. When it fails, you get soy shellacked brussels sprouts with fried garlic, which had so much promise, but the sprouts were waving their white flag under a heavy dousing of soy glaze. The winner at Yardbird, is strangely not even on the menu: the Korean Fried Chicken(aka KFC). There is a fried chicken and there is a Korean Fried Cauliflower, but asking for the KFC sauce on the chicken is a secret I learned from the very amiable and friendly Canadian beverage director, Eliiot, who seemingly runs between the group’s three locations over the course of an evening. Another star for me was the peanut butter ice cream. I know that’s a strange one – a Japanese restaurant run by North Americans in Hong Kong really has no business making good peanut butter ice cream. I will say it isn’t quite as thick as a North American ice cream – it spoons more like a glacé or gelato – but the flavours are stellar. I took the bartender’s suggestion to pair this with a coffee junta sake, and I’m glad I did. The sake ends up being the sweeter of the two but pairs beautifully with the ice cream.

The tip for this restaurant is that you have to get there by 5:30 to get into the restaurant by 6pm. They don’t accept reservations at all. So you need to come here early to get the first seating, otherwise you will have to wait at least an hour and a half for the next round. The food here is fantastic and if you go through all the Unilocal reviews you will get a sense of what people are ordering. No time for that? You can always ask the servers for recommendations on their most popular dishes. The excellent server also knew just about how many dishes we needed. Prices here do you add up very quickly so be prepared for your bill!

Where do I start? The people eating here were beautiful… Too bad I was in shorts and polo. This place is definitely busy and I was asked to stand for a little while until a place opened at the bar. It wasn’t that long… Max 10mins. The food… Great selection of yakitori skewers… I let my bar man choose the skewers for me and they came out perfectly cooked and all very tasty. They offered half servings of the fried chicken as well. Which was perfect for me. All I can say is they are the best fried chicken pieces I have ever had and served with some really nice Mayo. Drinks wise… The selection of Japanese whisky is top notch. I ordered the yamazaki on the rocks which was great. The service was excellent and very attentive. The bar man was good too and I had no problem leaving a tip. Overall this is an excellent place to eat. Tasty and great service. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s just a short walk from my home.

One of my favorite restaurants in HK. Sure it’s painful as they do not take reservations, but the food itself is worth the wait. Go with a bunch of friends so that you can order more food. Order: liver mousse, sweet corn tempura, Brussels sprouts, meat ball skewer, chicken wing skewer, KFC, chicken skin fried rice. For drinks, you can never go wrong with whiskey lemonade or a Hitochino nest white ale beer. There is no service charge on the bill. Give at least 10% percent for the friendly service or more if it’s outstanding! Enjoy!

Woah. Yardbird is a classic example that hipster cuisine is the same around the world. Yes, there are no reservations. Yes, the queue is out the door. Yes, it’s mood lit and filled with beautiful people eating gourmet eats and drinking top-notch cocktails with hilarious names. But that doesn’t negate the fact that this place is absolutely worth the hype. Absolutely. We put our name on the list and was told it could be an hour or so. 45 minutes later, we got a call telling us our table was ready. We were sat as soon as we came in. They gave us a drink menu without a food menu and only when we told them that we didn’t want cocktails did they give us a food one. That was a little annoying, but only a little bit. It’s a very relaxed place and I’m sure most people are there to drink and then eat and then drink again. It’s small plate style, and I don’t think there was a single thing that wasn’t delicious. Standouts were the KFC(Korean Fried Cauliflower), which was tasty as all get out, but could have used possibly a lighter batter since it was very heavily fried. And the pork belly, which was easily some of the best pork belly I’ve ever had. Ever. They even nailed a Scotch Egg, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen a spot do outside of England. Service is attentive and friendly and we were always looked after, despite how busy it got as we ate. It’s a pricy spot and you will pay for what you eat, but my god, it’s worth it.

If you like food and you come to HK then I have to say this is a must, simple as that. The service is excellent, everyone was in a good mood always being super helpful but not annoying. The music is good and the clientele is quite diverse. Every single dish we tried as quite good, some exceptional. Do not leave without trying the breast, meatball and KFC. The asparagus with egg was quite unique as well.

We went to Yardbird with the recommendation from a friend. We found the waitstaff to be very helpful in explaining the menu and how we should order. There was even an option to put yourself in the hands of the chef and let them order for you. We decided to pick our own things combined with waitstaff recommendations. We ordered: yellowtail salad tempura corn fritters Brussels sprouts breast inner thigh meatball KFC(korean fried cauliflower) duck fried rice(special of the day) Our favorites from the list were the Brussels sprouts, tempura corn fritters, and the meatball. The KFC was good(considering neither one of us loves cauliflower) but wasn’t our favorite. We think that the people next to us got the chicken fried rice and it looked better than the duck fried rice special. It came with an egg in it and they had to stir it around themselves. We also ordered the Yaki Lime drink which was pretty much just a mohito. It was okay — we liked it but only drank one. We’re only here for vacation and need to try as many places as possible but if I come back here someday I would definitely go back to Yardbird!

I wanted to try this place because of… the hype I guess? I came here around 6 on a Monday because I have read that it can be really busy on most days. By the time it was around 640, there were already enough people to fill the restaurant inside. I guess I lucked out since it was a weekday. I met up with a friend around 630, and were immediately seated downstairs. They have two floors which is pretty neat. I had a lot of things, and so the server offered to take my stuff and put it somewhere safe so it wouldn’t be broken since I put it besides me. Very kind of this person. I didn’t quite catch his name. Sorry! He gave me and my friend the spiel of the menu. To sum it up, they’re an izakaya restaurant. All the meat on the skewers are ALL pork. KFC(Korean Fried Cauliflower) is one of their top menu items. In his words, to fill two people’s stomachs, we should order one smaller item, four(two each) yakitori, and one bigger item. You can do halves on the Sweet Corn Tempura and the KFC since it’s apparently very starchy to begin with. And they also offer omakase, the kind where they just bring food out to you and you pay whatever the price you eat. I think that’s all he mentioned if I can remember correctly. Very nice server. Very good service. My friend and I ordered the Eggplant Salad(120HKD), half order of Sweet Corn Tempura(don’t remember cost), thigh yakitori, skin yakitori, gizzard yakitori(these three yakitori — 42HKD each), meatball yakitori(comes with tare & yolk — 46HKD), and half order of KFC(don’t remember cost). –The Eggplant Salad was a burst of flavor in your mouth when you eat the eggplant. Pretty yummy in my opinion, but it was a small portion, mind you. –I wasn’t expecting much of the Sweet Corn Tempura, but when we tried it, It was literally a deep-fried ball of corn. I thought it was pretty delicious. Mm corn… –As for the yakitori, I liked the gizzard and thigh. I didn’t try the skin, but my friend didn’t really care for it. For the meatball, it was interesting. But I felt the meatball was really salty. The sauce was good since it’s tare and egg yolk, but the meatball was super salty. –KFC was pretty good. Saucy and fried with still the cauliflower crunchiness. I liked it. Pricing is quite hefty, but that’s okay. Once in a while to splurge on oneself wouldn’t hurt. I think it’s worth it. We were initially given the wrong bill that was up to about 700HKD, and luckily, my friend noticed it, and informed the server that it wasn’t our bill. When the real bill came back, we only had to pay about 400HKD. What a difference. So everyone, check your bills to make sure it’s yours! I’ll come back when I want to splurge on myself to try out other foods here. I also need to try the drinks they have next time. I didn’t do it this time since it was a Monday… Until next time!

Amazing meal and quality even years after my first time coming here. Yardbird lives up to the hype when it comes to premium quality, delicious and exceptional service. We had a feast of yakitori(Breast, Thigh, Skin, Meatball) which were all delicious, tender and juicy. The pickles were an amazing accompaniment– especially the shiso marinated pink radishes– so addicting. Other huge highlights not to miss: Korean Fried Cauliflower Corn Tempura Egg and Chicken Skin Rice(so rich and sinful and delicious!) Go early and try and get the KatsuSando(Fried Pork Sandwich) from their sister restaurant Sunday’s Grocery– for a limited time only per day! Bravo Yardbird. You are one of the rare and few establishments in the world that I will happily wait for 1 hour until being seated.

Normally when I go to a restaurant with high expectations, I get disappointed. Luckily, it did not happen here at Yardbird. They don’t take reservations so be prepared to wait even if you arrived past 9PM. It’s fun restaurant where everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, including the staff. We had a few round of drinks upstairs at the bar area before we were seated downstairs. There have a good selection of whiskeys/shochu/sake and their cocktails are very good. They also serve one of my favorite beer — hitachino nest! We ordered quite a number of items to try, including their signature KFC(Korean Fried Cauliflower), sweet corn tempura, and meatball with egg. Wonderful presentation and taste for both! The skewers are both hit and misses. Love the innards but not a big fan of the white meat. The meatball were heavily seasoned so adding the tare sauce was actually too much. My friend poured the tare sauce and just dipped it in the yolk and said it tasted much better. The rice was good too but skip the salad… it was good but nothing special. Verdict: Yardbird is pricy and the line is long but it is also fun and tasty.

I’d dreamt about a visit to Yardbird long before I even got to Hong Kong. Some of my food loving friends had instagramed pictures of chicken parts on sticks and declared it a winner, so I knew I needed to pay a visit at least once in my life. We arrived for dinner just before the after work rush hour, but we still needed to wait 20 minutes or so at the bar before scoring a table. This wasn’t such a hardship because you can get the full menu at the bar if you want. Indeed, as a couple I think these would be the best seats in the house, but as larger group we wanted(and needed) a table to spread out all our dishes of protein-packed flavour. The booze list at Yardbird is terrific. There’s cocktails, some interesting wines and a very good selection of beers and whiskey. I sadly couldn’t partake in a big night when I visited, but admired the selection all the same. The non-alcoholic selection was also rather good, with a really good ginger beer from Japan being my pick. I loved the retro bottle it came in. When it comes to the food, there’s plenty to choose from. We had an awesome waiter who gave us recommendations and advice about the best way to order so we didn’t fill up to fast before the stars of the show. Highlights for me were the chicken oysters and the meatball with egg. The corn tempura was intriguing and I wish I knew how they got it so perfectly round. The KFC(Korean Fried Cauliflower) was a good option for veggie lovers, though any health properties of the vegetable surely get wiped out with the sticky-sweat deep fried butter. Delicious all the same! The music and ambience at Yardbird is fun and makes for a really good night out. Food, booze, service and vibe are all spot on and worth every penny and minute you will wait. Go!

If I could give this place 6 stars, I would. This place reminds me of my favorite Japanese-influenced restaurant in Los Angeles, Hinoki & The Bird. In fact, I found out about Yardbird by trolling the Instagram account of Chef David Myers(who created Hinoki). Unlike Hinoki though, Yardbird is a yakitori joint and, in keeping with its name, focuses on grilling chicken parts from beak to bum. The service here is outstanding and is the best service that I’ve experienced since living in New Orleans. Every single person on staff is highly trained and professional; they know how to pour wine, they know that the label should be facing you, they know how to make you feel welcome and deal with your needs without making you feel like you’re a burden on them, even when they are slammed with tables and orders. There was one slight mix-up with one dish that I ordered, which went to another table instead of to mine. But all worked out in the end, as I was too full by that point to even dream of eating it, and they comped a cocktail that I had ordered to make up for the mix-up. I imagine that one reason why service here is so great is that there is no automatic service charge added to the bill. So these folks actually have to work for their tips and rely on the generosity(and math skills) of the patrons to make sure they are getting paid what they deserve. Maybe it’s the American in me, but I really, really like that aspect of Yardbird. The food and flavors were delicious. I’m not a huge fan of yakitori, so I stuck with the other menu items, which are more than plentiful to get a full meal and then some. The specials board that night had a mushroom salad(HK$ 130) and a clam karasumi udon(HK$ 160). I had both. When you go to a restaurant like this, you expect the portions to be tiny and almost too small, but that was not the case here. I was pleasantly full after eating both of these items. The flavor of both dishes were complex and amazing. I loved the bite of the black pepper in the udon dish. I can’t wait to go back and try more of the chef’s amazing creations. The best part may be the bar. What a ridiculous whiskey selection! I love Japanese whiskey, and they have it all. To make things easy, they’ve sorted out all of their selections into«peaty,» «woody,» etc. on a descriptive 2-page whiskey menu so you can pick your poison based on what your palate prefers. The cocktails are delicious as well, and you can tell that the bar staff is experienced and knows what the heck they are doing. Add some nice glassware and big round cubes to the mix, and you have a recipe for a fantastic evening. The strong, heavy pours help as well. I’m a big fan of the music that they play here, which mostly consists of 70s-era funk-influenced soulful jams. think curtis mayfield,(good) rick james, etc. Get here early if you don’t like waiting for a table. Otherwise, you can hang out in the bar area and start ordering/eating while standing. .. it’s actually not as bad as it sounds, and it’s a great location for people-watching. ..

Be prepared to wait for more than an hour to get in. For me I took 1.5 hours for a table for 4. Atmosphere is great and staff are fun and friendly, no wonder so many ppl come. We ordered a sake and leave the rest of the ordering to them. I’d say the food is good that they’ve made an effort to give variety of flavours for each item — KFC is Korean spicy chicken thigh is flavoured with Japanese plum, the chicken heart with ginger and leek, meatball comes with soy sauce and egg… a bit pricy but worth a try. However star is deducted for the sake. First, for a place specialised in sake and grills, it’s not too acceptable that there is no hot sake provided. Second, big flaw of not having ice bucket for cold sake(tho the staff is so nice to keep it in the fridge). Third, the sake itself is the type which is better to be served hot, not sweet or spicy enough to be served cold.

I really, really love this concept. Get there early if you want to get a seat… even on a random Wednesday seats were all full by 7 and they don’t take rezzies. I’d also put an order in for as many oysters(chicken oysters, that is) as you can get your hands on because they disappear fast and they are the best part of the bird. I was sadly not impressed so much by the sweet corn tempura ball which I found a bit greasy, but everything else including all of the other parts of the bird were grilled to perfection. The KFC(Korean Fried Cauliflower) was a standout dish as were the liver mousse with brioche. Don’t forget the amazing drink list!

I gotta say, right off the bat, the wait is horrendous. Don’t bother coming if its 7:30 and you’re hoping to get some grub straight away. There have been times where I go and have a small bite before heading over to wait! haha don’t judge me, it has always worked in my favor. I can’t help but smirk a bit when people complain about being hungry as they wait. Yardbird staff do try and accommodate you and your party as much as they can. You can choose to stand by the bar(or a seat if you’re lucky enough) and order your food while you wait for one of the coveted tables. Most people come for the food, while some come for the ambience. Great food with very little change in the few years they’ve been open. I am never dissatisfied with the food here. Always a hit! It’s not a place to bring a date. More like the place you would want to start off with a few friends before heading for more drinking. Have one, two, maybe even three… but be warned, Japanese whiskies will set you back about 200 each. One star off because its nearly impossible to get your foot in the door after 8:30.
