Roasted goose is something of a must try if you were ever to find yourself in Hong Kong; the usual place that people would point you to is Shum Cheng. That’s no bad choice too as the place does pull people in with its long tradition of serve the famed goose and the shops do provide a good touristy experience. However, as locals, that place has become a tad too expensive nowadays as you are being charged for some 400+ for a goose and that does seem a bit dear. Where else could you go if you were on a tighter budget? Wong Kee in Taipo is somewhere I would recommend. This place specializes on roast goose(its in its name) and a whole host of other roasted meats as well(pigeons is another favourite– yum). Its not the most spacious or luxurious of resturants(in fact I would say its marginally better than a cha charn teng) and you sit about two inches away from the next table. However, night after night you will find people queuing here for a table or ordering food for takeaway; this just goes to tell you how popular it is. The roast goose here is juicy, succulent and just like the stuff you have at Shum Cheng but at half the price(around); their menu is also quite extensive with a whole host of local favourites including seafood(their Oyster Pot in Port is quite good me thinks). The best thing of all is that the bill is always a surprise as I would say its a good 20% less than what you would expect to pay elsewhere. Of course, this bargain comes at a price– you will have to ignore the décor, the service, the fact that the floor is always slippery as an ice rink. But to put it bluntly– you don’t live there do you? I’m happy to put up with this– just enjoy the goose and get the hell outta there.
