So this place gets a five because they have a definate niche on the wine store/wine experience. You can visit their website to get the full gyst of this place, but as many know, The Flying Winemaker is based off the tv show Eddie McDougall’s, The Flying Winemaker. This place is the store front to the tv operation or vice versa. I had met a super cool employee named Sean of the Flying Winemaker at a recent food event in Quarry Bay that told me about this store. He suggested some off the beaten path, worthy Pinot Noir’s I should try. Being a faithful Pinot drinker, his suggestions were ones I had never heard of, so I knew I should pay them a visit. They are indeed a wine store that sells to the public(we paid cash, but we think they at the very least take Visa as well), but they seem to focus on group events, wine maker experiences, classes, etc. They have a membership program of sorts you can find out more details about from their website. I am not a member, but simply just stopped in to buy some wine. An «intern» from France named Guillaume helped me and was very welcoming and talkative with me about Pinot’s. There seemed to be a big office in the back with many office workers(not sure if they are the wheelers and dealers from the show or many buyers of wine who work for the Flying Winemaker). The girl behind the counter who rung us up was super friendly too and informative about different wines in their shop. This place is tucked up on the sixth floor of the Yu Yuet Lai Building. It does have some really great, not well known wine that they sell, including The Urban Project and a vintage made by a winery here in Hong Kong. This is not your typical wine shop! I walked out with three new Pinot’s to try. One from Italy(Masut Da Rive 2011), one from Chili(Talinay Tabali 2012) and one from New Zealand(Jamsheed Harem 2013). My total bill was about $ 700HKD and is in line with Pinot’s price as rated on my Vivino app. How do you make wine engaging, interesting, cool, explorative? With the Flying Wine Maker that’s how!
