There is only one thing I eat at Tai Hing — and that is their roast pork. It’s not to say that the food here generally is bad, it’s just that I’ve never really dined in at the restaurant to be able to try anything else. But anyway, I absolutely adore roast pork — the crispy skin, the tender meat… Seriously, what’s not to love? My family likes roast pork too and we often get takeaway to eat at home. Today, I went to the Tai Hing at Sha Tin Plaza to buy roast pork. I’ve always found it kind of interesting that here, Tai Hing and Tsui Wah, both iconic, cha chan teng restaurants, are right next to each other. The Tai Hing here is constantly busy — no surprise because it’s good food at affordable prices — so it was actually a bit of a squeeze walking in to the counter where the butchers are to order. Walking towards it, you’re immediately overwhelmed by the smell of the roast pork. When I mean overwhelmed, I mean it in a positive way — it just smells so good! But if you’ve never had roast pork, you may find the smell a little too much to bear. Here, you’ll see butchers hard at work, wielding huge kitchen knives that could do dangerous, dangerous things to anybody if they tried. We got the five star roast pork as usual, which is $ 98 for one catty. For a family of three, one catty is more than enough for us to share! The roast pork never disappoints. The crisp taste of the skin goes wonderfully well with the tenderness of the pork, making it a winning combination. Sometimes, the pork is a little less lean than other times, but it’s never a disproportionate amount of fat or anything, so it’s nothing to worry about. If you’re looking to get takeaway for the roast pork for dinner, I would suggest for you not to come too early. In fact, if you’re having dinner at 7pm, come at 6:30pm — if you buy the roast pork long before you actually eat it, the skin will be come a lot less crispy.
