Yep, I’m really writing about Starbucks right now and no, I’m still no Starbucks-fan, but this one in Duddell Street in Central absolutely is an exception. I’ve had quite a hard time finding the cute kind of coffee houses I like so much in Hong Kong, so I guess this came closest. And it’s lovely! Of course it’s Starbucks and the menu isn’t(much) different than what you’re used to, but this Starbucks looks very much unlike a Starbucks. That’s because they tried to make it look like an old-fashioned Hong Kong coffeehouse. They definitely succeeded! And, another plus: the Starbucks drinks here are way cheaper than in Europe.

I won’t tell you anything you don’t already know about Starbucks coffee, food etc … BUT, this one is the only Starbucks in the centre of town you can get into with a pram.
Just head up the road to the scary looking set of stairs — trust me, when you’re pushing a pram they look terrifying– and head into the last door on your right. Lifts are in the far right hand corner — go up to M1. Another bizarre feature of this particular Starbucks is the number of people that go there to take photos; tourists, locals and weddings. I kid you not, at least 70% of the times I’ve been there there’s been a bride in full get-up with professional photographers and hair and make up people. There is a small ‘museumey’ section at the back, and a sign talking about the tradition of old coffee shops, but I’ve never seen the attraction myself.
Maybe I’m missing something?

Wait. Before you question me why I am reviewing Starbucks, just hear me out. This is not just one of those Starbucks that you see every other corner around Hong Kong. This branch is located on Duddell Street. Yup. Duddell Street. Does that ring any bell? You know, the staircase where lots of newly-wed love to have photoshoots on it? But why? Actually, this street is renowned for its gas-powered lamps. And they are declared monuments of Hong Kong already. If that does not wow you already, try walk in the Starbucks. It looks like an old flat from the 60’s with birdcages, tiled floors and antiques. Wonder why? It is collaboration between retail design store G.O.D. and Starbucks and establisheda«Bing Sutt Corner» where it is fused with Hong Kong teahouse style and the contemporary appearance of a coffeehouse. It also serves as a symbol of East-meets-West modernization of Hong Kong Though all Starbucks sell the same thing, if you come here, you may see lots of people having photoshoots here so don’t be surprised. To me, this is not just one of those chains but one that captures the roots and spirit of Hong Kong.
