Owner: «Are you Vietnamese?» Me: Omg, how does he know?(in my head) o__O «My dad is. but… do I look Vietnamese? .Haha.»(No one ever says I do, maybe a lil, but definitely not fully) Owner: «No, but I can tell you are by the amount of fish sauce you’re pouring all over your plate.» Me: «Oh, haha. Yes, I like me some nuoc mam(fish sauce in Vietnamese)» — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – 3.5 stars The owner was pretty nice and engaged in small talk with me. As much as I enjoyed chatting with him, the food just didn’t cut it for me to rate it higher. I had the grilled pork chop rice and it was just so-so. Even the Vietnamese establishments in the USA taste better. On the plus side, they have specials here ranging throughout the day from breakfast to dinner that are VERY generous for the price(starting at just 19hkd!). + 3hkd&up to add a drink. Heads up for those that are a fan: They’re opening another Soo Viet in Kennedy Town in about a month, so business must be pretty good.

I have mixed feelings because I really want to love this little hole in the wall authentic Vietnamese place, especially because of the friendly and helpful service from what seemed to be a small family run restaurant. We ordered a few things to try, starting with the Fresh Spring Rolls. We asked to have them without pork and just shrimp which they had no problem adjusting. The spring rolls were pretty standard and tasted good. Next were the Chicken Wings. Super juicy with a combination of sweetness and smoky flavor from the grill. Next, I had the Hai Phong(grilled pork neck) Banh mi. The Baguette was really really good, the closest I’ve had to the ones in Vietnam. I thought the pâté was a bit heavy and had a much stronger presence(compared to Bep’s), but this could be the more authentic way. Next up was the Grilled Prawns with Vermicelli noodles. The noodles were plain and dry with some fresh shredded veggies to be mixed together. I recall the vermicelli noodle dishes to be like this in Hanoi and HCMC, but personally preferring Bep’s buttery version. So this is probably more authentic even though I have my preference. The grilled prawns had to be shelled(which took some work with your hands) and tasted a bit bland. My dinner partner thought they tasted«funky» and stopped after one. Lastly, we added the Chicken Salad. The salad consisted mostly of red cabbage with shreds of grilled chicken meat and some other veggies. It was a very refreshing dish to cleanse our palates. They had dinner sets from 45hkd and up, and even our bill was very inexpensive(270hkd) given we had 5 dishes and two drinks. I’d like to give this place another shot and definitely try to phở next time.

Best Vietnamese restaurant in HK hands down! While vacationing in Hong kong I started to crave Banh Mi(Vietnamese baguette). I came across Soo Viet and it was beyond expectations. I was really surprised that the owners/cook were actually Vietnamese because all the other Vietnamese restaurants I’ve been to were all owned by Chinese people. I knew I had hit the jackpot because the Banh Mi was delicious! it taste exactly like the one I grew up eating in the states. I came back the following week to try the Phở(noodle soup) and it was amazing. Phở broth isn’t something you can just cook up and serve. It takes a lot of time and ingredients and they made sure that it was perfect. If you are looking for AUTHENTIC Viet food I would def recommend this place.
