Wan Chai has its fair share of seedy bars and normal bars(I use the word normal with some flexibility here). What it also has that many don’t know about are a couple of bars that offer pool and… BEERPONG. I first fell in love with the sport, because a sport it certainly is, when I visited my friend in America. My first thought was why this wasn’t in the Olympics? Then took aim and fired. Scratch, a dark, dingy bar on the second floor offers its patrons a choice of pool, beer pong, or the bar. Or you can combine all three and make a night out of it. On most occasions the only reason my friends and I go to Scratch is to play beer pong, otherwise why walk up two stories for a drink when I can simply walk straight? I’ve been here a few times, and every time has been a blast. I love sports, I love a night out, and I really don’t mind making a fool of myself(Experience does that to a man), I can do all those at the same time in Scratch. The bar is not big. If my memory serves me well there are four pool tables that can be converted in beer pong arenas. The tables are almost always occupied so expect a wait of about thirty or so minutes. Waiting in a queue sucks, waiting at a bar not so much. I’ve considered putting my name down to play pool but most the guys there are tattooed veterans that can do one of those behind-the-back shoots so I just sip my drink and wait for the beer pong instead. Scratch is a great place to start the night, have some fun, lighten the mood and get tipsy before moving on to bigger and better things… like further down the road.
