This Red MR in Causeway Bay is conveniently located in the Windsor House, which is close to the MTR station. It also had great views of Victoria Park! I also really appreciated that even though they asked us to close our bill, they still allowed us to sing until whenever we wanted because there wasn’t anybody waiting. All of the equipment(speakers, mics, TVs) is in good working condition. I also think it’s cool that they offer beer pong and darts in the front area. We went on a Saturday night over the CNY weekend, and it was $ 229 /person for 2.5 hours of fun and two drinks. The total came out to be around $ 250. I thought it was reasonable for being a prime time slot during the holiday weekend.

Despite being a bit of a show off at heart, I never thought that going to karaōke would be a good idea. The thought of torturing other customers in a bar with my screeching was enough to end my ideas of pop stardom rather rapidly. However, Red Mr has addressed this problem by providing a private karaōke experience just for me and my friends. You see, I don’t mind torturing my friends, it’s just that the public don’t really need to hear my singing. Surprisingly, for a Hong Kong karaōke bar, Red Mr has a great deal of English songs(as well as plentiful local Canto and Mando songs as well). Of course, there are the standard Michael Jackson or Madonna numbers, but I was incredibly surprised to see The Lonely Island’s «I’m on a Boat» there. It’s testament to the great range of English songs that they do have. Having a private room makes the whole experience much more sociable for your friends, as well as the aforementioned public, who don’t have to hear me wailing. Food and drinks are very reasonably priced, and are delivered directly to room with just a phone call on the internal intercom. The Windsor House Red Mr has a private toilet in each room. This is great convenience(get it?), but I personally don’t like it because it makes the whole room smell of bleach and pee. The Wan Chai branch on Tonnochy Road doesn’t have the private toilets, which makes the rooms slightly bigger(and less smelly). Aside from karaōke, there is also beer pong(unfortunately played with water), darts, and fus-ball. The staff are friendly, but be warned, a lot of them don’t speak very good English. They are very helpful when asked. Unfortunately, some of the equipment is a little tired, so you may occasionally suffer from technical breakdowns. If karaōke is not your bag, you can still hire the room out for a private party, and have the food and drink brought you as before. During the recent World Cup, I noticed a lot of groups using these rooms to watch the games overnight. On that note, I’m not exactly sure of the closing time, but I have never outlasted Red Mr despite staying until three or four in the morning.

I’ve been to Red MR a couple of times with friends and have never been disappointed. The selection of English songs is actually quite large and very updated too, and you can pretty much find any song that’s a Billboard hit right now there. Of course, Canto and Mandarin pop isn’t lacking either. Red MR offers lunch and dinner sets(comes with a drink) where you can order what you want and call for it to be delivered to your room at any time, and the food is not bad at all and is always served hot. I find that the price for dinner sets — about $ 170 on weekdays — is a little much though. Most rooms have a toilet as well which is great because you don’t have to leave the room to go to the bathroom. Comparing Red MR with NeWay(another popular karaōke chain here), Red MR is definitely better to me because it has a much larger selection of English songs, and the rooms are generally nicer at Red MR because it’s newer. NeWay is more catered to the local population and therefore, their selection of Chinese songs is a lot more impressive than of English. One complaint with Red MR though is that some rooms smell very strongly of cigarette smoke. The first time I went to the Red MR in Windsor House, the room we were assigned reeked pretty bad. That was the only time I went to this one — other times, I went to the Red MRs in Wanchai and Tsim Sha Tsui and the rooms didn’t have this problem. So I’m not sure if it’s just particular rooms at the one in Windsor House, or if we just got unlucky but if you’re wary, bring perfume or something to mask the smell.
