As far as I remember Ka Lai Yuen has been here in the same spot selling beef balls noodles. The last time I was here probably was 15 maybe 20 years ago. My reason for not re-visit this place was there are too many options around. Until last night — the 2nd day of Chinese New Year and a lot of places were still closed. So I decided to pay Ka Lai Yuen a visit. A lot have changed over the years, business is as good as ever, decorations of the store are busy and loud — there are almost no vacant space on the wall AND the ceiling. Every single inch of space is occupied with decorative materials, 8 ceiling fans turning at the same time, gold Buddhas and mirrors everywhere, and pictures of food are pasted on the wall like wallpapers. Their menu is very extensive, too expensive that it’s confusing and time consuming to read. They offer any kinds of meat in a ball shape and sliced sausage shape, also all the innards plus the private parts of the cow if you fancy. Yes I said the private parts — the sex organs of both male and female of the animal… don’t see them too often in restaurants in HK. For dare devils out there, why not? So I ordered the beef tendons and tripe with thick noodles, and a bowl of plain cuttlefish balls which is what they are famous for. Both tendons and tripe were very tasty as they should be, tendons themselves were so tender to the point that they could melt in my mouth. Noodles were OK due to the fact that they were made in the factory anyway(I know they don’t make their own noodles). The famous cuttlefish balls, I could taste the bits and pieces of chewy cuttlefish in them and a little bit of water chestnuts added for crunchiness, the overall texture was not mushy like some other cuttlefish balls I have had, but more flavor was needed. The seaweed came in the broth had a kind of odd taste to it though. And food here is expensive, $ 49 for the tendon & tripe noodles and $ 43 for the cuttlefish balls, I don’t even have to pay this much in Central, and this is only Yuen Long! A very important note to people that are allergic to MSG, they do use a lot. So much that my mouth and throat were dry the entire night after eaten there. A whole litre of water didn’t even help.
