Newsweek’s «World’s 101 Best Places to Eat»?! Now that’s a hefty title to uphold. Dimdimsum Dim Sum Specialty Store(what a mouthful!) serves your typical dim sum. Queue up early for lunch, as this place fills up quickly. There are pictures of some specialty items and best-sellers along the walls, and their menu is in both English and Chinese. Typical to many dim sum shops, you check off which items you want from the paper menu. We ordered six dishes to share: steamed piggy custard buns, pineapple buns, shrimp dumplings(har gow), pork dumplings(sui mai), steamed spareribs, and beef-filled rice flour rolls. The piggy buns were too cute to eat, but I did nevertheless. The buns were fluffy and filled with a good amount of warm, creamy egg custard that wasn’t too rich, but it was a little too sweet. They advertise their pineapple buns as ‘real’ because the buns are actually filled with a sweet but slightly tart pineapple custard. I enjoyed the golden crusty top, as seen in the traditional non-filled pineapple buns. The shrimp dumplings’ skin was very delicate and not too chewy, encompassing large, succulent, and juicy shrimp inside. Overall, I was quite satisfied with the dim sum here. I wouldn’t say Dimdimsum’s dim sum is the best I’ve had, but it’s definitely good and worth a visit if queues are short.

Food wasn’t as amazing as I had heard but it was good. I liked the steamed shrimp dumplings and the pineapple buns the most. Service here needs improvement. Servers were slow and forgot the drinks part of our order.

Had a great experience at this dim sum place. A little difficult to find as its only a little store front. Menu easy to order from. Food came fast, hot, yummy and reasonable prices. In will always go to this place when I am in Hong Kong.

Would you like to check out dimdimsum dim sum for some fresh dimsum? Now, that’s a tongue twister. I put very high expectations on dim sum here in Hk since I love eating it and HK is suppose to have the best in the region. Sadly, this one is just average. We visited the branch in Mongkok at about 1130am for brunch and was told by the waitress that the shop only opens by noon(12pm). Outside the restaurant, you’ll see huge posters that the restaurant is recommended by Newsweek in their«World’s 101 Best Places to Eat» — a list of eating joints worldwide curated by celebrity chefs like Bourdain and David Chang(of Momofuku NYC fame). We waited outside the shop for a while and by 1145am, the door finally opened and we proceed inside. While looking at the«menu», which is a dim sum checklist of items all written in Mandarin(horror. we cant read!), people started to fill up the entire restaurant within minutes. The restaurant is very small; a typical HK local restaurant where the tables are arranged so close, you can literally listen to all the gossips from the people next to you whether their sister in law’s brother’s godson’s sister got engaged or their family dog died after raping another dog in their neighbourhood. LOL. Our food arrived piping hot on our table fresh from the steamer /wok. We ordered the usual bbq pork bun, por lor pao(pineapple bun), har kow, siew mai and a specialty dish of deep fried eggplant with fish paste. Everything was just decent, something I can easily get in Malaysia or Singapore. The biggest disappointment was the egg plant. It was listed as special but what we got was eggplant soaked in oil so bad that when I picked it up with my chopsticks and just mildly squeeze it, the oil starts to drip from it. I took a bite just for the taste and flavor and put it aside the remaining right after. To finish off the meal, we ordered something sweet and turned out to be the favorite. The steam rice cake in brown sugar was amazingly good. Light and fluffy, and not too sweet with the distinct taste and smell of the brown sugar — heaven! There were only 4 small pieces in a basket and it rounded up the meal nicely. The homemade soya milk is also commendable. Service was just A-OK! I would definitely come back for the steam rice cake but for dim sum, im better off to other outlets.

This quality of the food at this particular Dimdimsum store isn’t very high. I’ve been to the one in Jordan and that one is much better. Everything here felt like it was very oily or had been sitting for a while. The location of it is also a little bit hidden because it’s behind a lot of signs and cars. If you’re in the Mong Kok area, I would suggest checking out a different dimsum shop.
