I ordered 9 yakitori skewers and half pint of suntory. I think it was enough for one person, since I wasn’t overly full by the end of it. Skewers I like: Ox Tongue(HK$ 48) — This was good. I ordered one more at the end of the meal when i wasn’t quite full yet. Minced Chicken(HK$ 58) — Served with soy and egg yolk. Loved the texture of the minced chicken. Chicken with Japanese Long Onion(HK$ 36) — The onion was nicely charred, which gives the dish a nice smokey taste Hokkaido Scallop(HK$ 88) — juicy! Skewers I don’t remember much of: Fujizakura pork belly(HK$ 36) Asparagus bacon(HK$ 34) Quails egg(HK$ 32) Chicken Heart(HK$ 30) Sounds like a 4 star worthy experience right? However, I don’t know if this place deserves more than 3 star. Here’s my reasoning: My issue here is more on the price. I mean… I’m not from around here, is this the norm for Hong Kong? Food was good, but not mindblowingly good. If the price was 20% or even 15% less, i would have rated this place 4 stars for the pretty good food + ambience. However, I feel like for the price they were charging it should be more than just ‘pretty good’.

It has the potential to become the Yardbird equivalent in Causeway. Excepts of course, you can get a advance booking here so you don’t have to wait for hours for a table. For geeks out there like me can even book on Unilocal in two simple clicks. Ka-boom. It’s at the very end of the Haven Street. Thanks to Park Haven, the latest high end residential building in the area, Haven Street has transformed from the edge of Causeway Bay, to the heart of next up and coming hipster spot. The décor is very cozy. Not a big joint, but it’s very nice that they make use of the front windows and connect them to the outside world. Dishes are very similar to Yardbird, sans KFC and corn tempura. But Bilibala has its specialty too. Bacon lychee wrap is by far the best, and they certainly have a larger variety of dishes outside of chicken. My night consisted of ox tongue, minced chicken, Fujizakura pork belly, goose liver, Hiroshima oyster cutlets, etc.(yeah I don’t remember what I ordered from veggies. typical Kevin L). The table was a bit small for all the dishes arrived at once(which happened the first time I came here), but staff were now definitely aware of the situation and the dishes arrived in slower pace accordingly, keeping the table comfy to dine on, and food hot and fresh.

3.5 Stars Just around the corner from Via Tokyo, a quiet cul-de-sac awaits with hidden gem eateries like cafes, dessert shops and now a Japanese yakitori bar comically named Bilibala. Why is the name comical? Well«bilibala» is supposedly what loud chatters sound like in Cantonese and thus the name is aptly suited then for a bar serving drinks and yakitori which is perfect for a night out chit chatting with friends. Some of the things we tried were: Cold Japanese Tomato with Black Truffle($ 58) — the black truffle was quite aromatic while the sweet and fresh tomatoes made for a very refreshing snack. Japanese Fish Ball with Wasabi($ 48) — I was pleasantly surprised by this unique combination as the chewy fish balls went perfectly with the spicy wasabi. Tamagoyaki($ 58) — the tamagoyaki was well executed with the many soft layers of sweet egg. Lychee with Bacon($ 32) — whoever thought of this combination of lychee with bacon is pure genius. The sweetness of the lychee balanced the saltiness of the meat perfectly. Just be careful when eating this as the lychee may still be quite hot and may burn your mouth. Ox Tongue($ 40) — the ox tongue was a bit average as the tongue could be thicker and bouncier in texture but the array of sauces for the yakitori were a nice touch. Fresh Eel($ 88) — Loved the crispiness of the skin and the tenderness of the eel! Tsukune($ 48) — the ever classic minced chicken meatball was delicious to eat as bits of chewy cartilage had been incorporated into the meatball so it was crunchy-licious! Grilled Rice Roll($ 38 each) — in 3 flavors: cod fish roe, pickled plum, and bonito flakes. The rice rolls were quite crunchy to eat while I especially liked the spiciness of the cod fish roe and the tartness of the pickled plum. Japanese Mochi with Cheese($ 28) — finally we ended the night perfectly with these scrumptiously soft and chewy mochi filled with melting cheese that were just heavenly to eat. Verdict — the affordable price tags and great quality of food at Bilibala make it a great spot for happy hour with friends to eat and drink the night away.

A rather interesting yakitori bar. The semi open style gives this place a particularly causal and hip feeling. It’s so relaxing to chit chat and enjoy the food and drinks here. Although it’s quite small, the vibe is great with live music on Sunday and exceptionally friendly staff /owner. The food is impressive too. The dishes are delicious and natural. As introduced by the owner, they season with himalaya salt, perfect for those not looking for something too extreme or strong in taste. I haven’t ate much, but the ox tongue, asparagus with pork and the deep fried oyster were all very delicious. Comparing to a few of the other yakitori bars(e.g. Yardbird /Three Monkeys), Bilibala is even much more down to earth, relaxing and casual(to me means perfect). Will certainly come back again.
