Pizzakraam Mario

The legend that is Mario in Utrecht is something you just have to try. Ofcourse you can go for the «broodje Mario» but there are so much more sandwhiches to choose from. If you are in Utrecht you just have to stop by Mario!

I used to live in Utrecht. it was the first city I lived in while in the Netherlands. Broodje Mario was always a sort of our Saturday lunch tradition and I always ordered it in Italian with some pepperoncini on the side.
I really miss this sandwich shop that remained pretty much the same all those years and the price of the Broodje Mario sandwich also didnt change much. If you are ever in Utrecht just give it a try and I am sure you will enjoy it!

We ran into a local while walking from the train station to downtown Utrechy, and he told us we just had to try a broodje mario… of course we were intrigued… what was a broodje mario and how did it become so iconic of Utrecht…
So he led us right to it! Such a simple sandwich, meat cheese veggies, no sauce, but the bread FRESH baked, and I mean FRESH our bun was still hot, and you could see them being baked. So efficient, they sell almost as quick as they are made, there is little to no lineup, because you are literally IN and OUT, There are some nearby tables, but no table service, you go to the counter you order, and minutes later if not seconds you are on your way. I say minutes as we ordered a pizza as well as a Broodje, and BOTH were fantastic! They take the pizza and bake it for you as you’ve ordered, you can see them sitting there in the cooler just waiting to be someones tasty treat. If you are just ordering a broodje it takes only seconds… That’s how fast they are making them, they have this down to a science! And I’m craving one now :(

You cannot have been to Utrecht without having had a broodje mario :) This place is such an icon in Utrecht (well, at least for everybody that studies/​studied there :))
Yesterday, during our visit to Utrecht, we just stopped by here and it still tastes the same. If you do like the spicy peppers, make sure you do ask for the pepperoncino on top of your broodje mario!

«Broodje Mario» is a word that should be added to the Utrecht-​dictionary. Mr. Mario (or whatever his name may be) is a genius, he just created this SUPER Simple sandwich, but everyone in Utrecht knows what it is and LOVES it.
These Italian sandwiches are a reason to go to downtown Utrecht on a busy Saturday afternoon. There is always a line, but it goes super quick (as the choices are small and the sandwiches are easy).
Do ask for extra «peppertje» (green sweet pepperoni) for an extra bite to it!
YUMMY! Sitting in San Francisco, CA thinking about it now! If only I could get one right now!
