Disappointing food. I am a real fan of jamies books and tv programmes but restaurants lack quality staff. Was looking forward to this. Ingredients are good But do these chefs season the food… Tasteless dressing on salad. Pasta sausage? Where is the sausage. Concept is good but I have a feeling staff is not proper trained. Being to several Jamie restaurants I don’t understand the fuss. Skip them from now on. Going to make my own tasty pasta at home!

Jamie’s Italian Restaurant in the Markthal in central Rotterdam is one of a chain of restaurants opened by Jamie Oliver the English celebrity chef. Interestingly, he has 40 restaurants in England, but this is his first in the Netherlands. The Restaurant first opened about 9 months ago. The restaurant is located in the Markthal(translated as Market Hall), an indoor market with a large number of specialty food stands, but it is a laid out as a traditional restaurant with a classic décor. Jamie’s is currently very popular and reservations are recommended. We had a party of four and the service was quick. Although the server seemed to have a relatively poor grasp of both Dutch and English, we were able to quickly put in our orders and the food and drinks were delivered efficiently. I ordered the Jamie’s Sausage Pappardelle and my wife ordered the truffle pasta. I was very excited to try Jamie’s, since I’m a fan of Jamie Oliver, and this maybe led to overly high expectations. The food was good, and the presentation was wonderful, but it wasn’t great. The pasta was perfectly cooked, but it didn’t taste as good as other handmade pasta I’ve had. The sausage in the Sausage Pappardelle was pretty spicy and this somewhat overwhelmed the taste. My wife related that the truffle pasta was good, but she also expected a more interesting flavor from her meal. Jamie’s Italian Restaurant has very interesting menu options and the prices were very reasonable, but I expected a little more from a celebrity chef run establishment.

Appetizer: olives Main: lam chops, prawns linguine Desert: Lemon cheesecake Great service. Our sever was very friendly, care, and professional. We can even see the sweet part of his heart from his response. Food was great too! I can taste how much they care of the food. I should tell that Lemon cheesecake was phenomenal!

Great concept in the nice new foodhall of Rotterdam. There is the option to take a smaller portion of pasta or salad, to be able to try several dishes. All the dishes were delicious to me. The different bruchetta’s and the superfood salad with salmon were good enough to come back. And the epic brownie is a valid reason too. We came with five girls for Sunday’s lunch and they gave us a cozy round table. The staff was very nice and gave us good recommendations. When one bruchetta did not come, because it was apparently delivered to a different table, they did not charge us for it in the end. Nice interior with hints to Rotterdam. If you are familiar with the city, try to guess the different meanings of the ‘Delfts Blauw’ tiles!

We had dinner here a few weeks ago with a group of 6 people. When we arrived we were warmly greeted and brought to our table. The restaurant is nicely decorated and looks very inviting. Regarding the food, everything was very delicious, especially the pasta nero and we didn’t have to wait very long. However, some aspects of our evening weren’t all that great. For example, due to their«fresh-food» policy, which of course is a good thing, we couldn’t get the Burger anymore at 20:00h, which was a pity. Furthermore, the service was’t all that friendly and forgot several of our drink orders, which was suboptimal. All in all, it’s worth a visit for sure and the pasta was really good, but don’t expect too much.

To summarize our experience at Jamie’s Italian in the Markthal was very disappointing. Poor quality of food, lack of service and unexperienced personnel who don’t know how to treat their guests! It started with receiving our starters before our drinks. After waiting for more than 20 minutes for our drinks and asking for them, the waitress did not apologize and get our drinks. Instead of getting our drinks we had to listen to a totally uninteresting story about a colleague running of and another one being sick. After our starters, ordering our main course also did not went smooth at all. Another waitress was taking our order, which we had to repeat three times. A new excuse from her side popped up about being unexperienced. At that point we began to lose our trust in the service and were hoping that our mains would be better than the service. We ordered 4 dishes, two of them were fine(truffle tagliatelli and prawn linguini). But the other two dishes were horrible, the porcini fettuccini tasted like canned mushroom soup and the risotto was too salt. After finishing our main courses a waiter came over dancing to our table. He did not ask if everything was ok, and just continued to dance and take the plates without looking nor talking to us,. At this point we really lost our patience and complained about the service and quality of the food to the manager. The manager was sorry for our experience, but did not give us any recognition about the quality of food at all, she even claimed that the quality was the same as in London, which it is clearly not! In the end she offered us desserts on the house, which was a fine solution, because the only thing that did not disappoint were the desserts! Unfortunately the overall experience was such a huge disappointment, that they will not see me back anytime soon!
