The Flying Pig introduced me to the Dutch breakfast belief that it’s okay to eat buttered toast topped with chocolate shavings and all the other toppings Americans would usually put on ice cream. Hagelslag is delightful, and the spread of jams, jellies, and colorful little candies on the big ol’ breakfast table upstairs is enough to make you feel like a kid all over again. For the people who need to stay just that much farther from DiabetesLand, there’s always a hefty platter of Dutch cheeses and peanut butter. I stayed in the dorm with 20 people, and despite how cacophonous you might think this is, it actually was totally fine. The only thing that’s unavoidable is the slight funk of so many people in one space. It’s walking distance to the beach, and just down the street, there’s a carnival that goes into the late hours. So even if you don’t ride anything, it’s a great opportunity for photography as the whirling neon reflects off the water and sand. Very friendly staff!
