I live very close by so it’s shameful it’s taken me so long to really do this market. We walked through it before but assumed everywhere would only take cash(not true, but I’m not sure they all take pin). Today, to celebrate SAIL the stall holders are all wearing sailor hats, a lady was cooking and handing out tasters of mussels and the lady with the raspberry stall had a very cute raspberry cheesecake with a decorative sail boat. This is a buzzing but not overcrowded little market not far from Museumplein. There are plenty of delicious saucisson and sausage stalls — we got a walnut saucisson and one with Roquefort but you could try a different one every week for quite a while! There is a large fruit and veg market, a fish stall that sells mussels, tuna, salmon, amongst others and also fresh herring. There are a lot of great items in this quite small and cosy market… you can find tasty truffle infused pâté, cooked chicken, a huge number of mayonnaise options or fresh hazelnut-basil pesto, delicious olive tapenade, fresh bread and croissants, «English style» pies including Suriname chicken, steak and others. There is seating in the middle of this market. The burger, salad and pasta stall by EcoGastronomy was very popular but we didn’t have to wait long to get served. The lady running it was a friendly Bosnian who has lived here 15 years and she was encouraging me with my(very basic) Dutch. She was also happy to speak English. Burger and choice of a Greek, roasted veg or black lentil salad was 5 euros and very nice. You could get a larger salad or Aubergine with cheese for 3.50 and they also did three pasta options. As a lazy neighbour and as the market is open until 17:00, it would be nice to see some other hot food options like dim sum but this market is great and we’ll definitely be back.

What a great market! I usually go to the Albert Cuyp for normal shopping, as it is closer to my house, and bigger. But last Saturday, when I ended up there rather by coincidence, I remembered why I passed by there almost every week back when I used to live in Oud Zuid. Thus, I have decided to do my best to visit next week again. The market is small, but very ‘gezellig’. It’s quite cute actually. It has a lot of different things — flowers, burgers, wine, meats, vegetables, cheese. I also got a homemade spicy sun-dried tomato mayonnaise. It was a bit pricey at 6,95 euros, but it is amazing! Perfect also for summer dishes, I paired it with cod cheeks on little gem salad and onion-parsley-tomato salsa. Delicious! But indeed, the price is a little shocking, especially if 3 stalls further you can buy a bottle of rose for the same price(even a bit less, actually). Also, my friend and I got a burger and enjoyed it in the sun; I recommend :) There is not a lot of place to sit, but if you can snag a spot at the shared tables, it is really great. Anyways — loving it — and I will be back for sure.
