White Elephant

I botched an on-​line reservation on a weekend night here recently. That would be instant death in 99.9% of situations at this very popular Thai spot. The staff was incredibly sweet, but unfortunately they could not squeeze us in and it was a 45 minute wait just to get take out. After I confirmed that the error was mine and apologizing to the hostess, we made our way out the door. As we were a few steps away, the hostess came running up and let us know that a couple had just left earlier than they had expected. We had a table if we wanted it!
That was great fortune on our part as we had our taste buds set on Thai that night. The food was well above average and spiced perfectly. The staff was exceptional and extremely friendly. Very relaxing and autentic meal. Wish we had room left for dessert.
Just make sure to make your reservations via phone to be safe.

Life is a green papaya. Eat the som tam (green papaya salad) of White Elephant to believe it. Not the cheapest Thai in town, but it sure is one of the most creative. Try to count the elephants in this restaurant.

Disappointing overall. Such a shame!
The interior and décor is beautiful, but unfortunately they serve the smallest portions on Earth while charging twice as much as other Thai restaurants in the city.

Went here in dec 12 had some great food with friends, with good service and helpful staff on a Friday night but as others have said a bit on the expensive side at 45 € each but good and nice fresh food.

Let me say: read my reviews… I hate dishing out anything less than 3-​stars.
Durp! With a handful of good sit-​down Thai restaurants and a plethora of take-​away/​delivery Thai spots, why would you dine at White Elephant, sacrificing: flavor + service + food quality?
The food: bland — good. I won’t discount the flavors are sub par and you can certainly get by with a plate of this stuff… but:
The service… er, I’m ashamed to say it, but what service? We had to call out, embarrassingly a few times, for not only a waiter, but also our food after they’d forgotten it, and then again for:
Ooops, Did you just bite into a pack of «Do Not Eat» silica gel? Yeah. In the pad thai.
Dude, everyone makes mistakes. I’ve made a shit load, for sure. So, I get that. But, at 22 – 30 euro plates, shitty service and sub par foods… I’d say the poison, which had spilled into our food and mouths before we noticed it, was just a bit too far for this So. Cal gal’s laid back tastes.
On an upside — the Exec. Chef was a very humble, gracious woman with a whole lot of charm when she apologized and offered us champagne. That counts for something, right?
Bottom line: if you have extra euros burning in your pocket + you want to gamble and Las Vegas is just too far away + your taste buds were burned off due to the apocalypse… then this might be your restaurant.

This is the best Thai restaurant I’ve been to, and I’ve been to a lot! Why 4 stars instead of 5? I’ll get to that in a bit.
We got the rice cake and seafood app. It was fantastic and a great start. Then on to the main courses. I would highly recommend the Porky Crab and the Banana Curry dishes. Finished with dessert, both of which were delicious.
4-​star rating: so I did my check in routine on Unilocal and was surprised to get a 15% off everything coupon. I showed this to the hosttess and she didn’t know what it was. I assume the restaurant agrees to accept them if they come from Unilocal (and it had a 4 hour timer).

Wir waren dort mit einem Grouponangebot und dementsprechend waren unsere Erwartungen nicht sehr hoch. Deutlich zu unrecht.
Was fuer ein Gaumenschmaus!
Sehr hoefliches Personal und absolut authentische Kueche!
Die Preise sind schon gepfeffert, aber wenn man sich (z.B. zu zweit) mal was besonderes goennen will
ist man hier an der richtigen Adresse.
Scharf ist scharf hier, aber es wird immer auch etwas zum abmildern gereicht.
Der Vorspeisenteller White Elephant war wirklich phaenomenal.
Von Allem ein bischen zum ausprobieren.
Da der Originalpreis des Menues weit ueber 100 Euro gelegen haette kann ich nicht versprechen in naechster Zeit dort wieder vorbeizuschauen, aber etwas Besonderes goennt man sich auch nicht jeden Tag.

Ich muß ja zugeben, als ich vor dem Restaurant stand hatte ich nicht damit gerechnet das es ein nicht zu beschreibender Gaumenschmaus wird. Es ist ein ganz kleiner Laden mit echt netten Bedienungen. Alles sehr Asiatisch gehalten. So muß das ja auch sein. Und das Essen war schon fast unbeschreiblich gut. Asien pur.Besonders nett, die in Kokusnüssen servierten Cocktails. Ist auf jedenfall einen Besuch wert wenn man in Amsterdam ist.

Excellent food. Pricey for Thai food but interior of restaurant is very nice and its more of a fine dining experience than a quick bite, therefore cost is to be expected.
Service is efficient and the waiters and waitresses are competent and knowledgeable; however, a tad on the snooty side.
Overall recommended and will go back for the right occassion.

Kleiner schöner Laden mit außergewöhlich netter Bedienung. Leider ist der Laden etwas teuer, deswegen nur 4 Sternchen. Aber es lohnt sch trotzdem. Das Essen ist fantastisch. Eine tolle Atmosphäre, da möchte man gerne den ganzen Abend sitzen bleiben.
