brown bars, i love you. if you’re in amsterdam– don’t be a hooligan and end up at some random trash bar– throw on the monocle and saddle up to one of the many brown bars scattered across the city. why? because the beer is delicious, the genever is tasty, the crowd is the right kind of weird, and the ambience feels like you’re being heavy petted by Dickens. go.

Wow, this place is a blast! And soaked in liquor history. We visited twice for tastings of old and young jenever. Our barkeep was friendly and highly informative, and walked us through the range of this delicious spirit. I became a fan.(He was also generous with tourism tips to round out our week) In back is a broad selection of traditional liqueurs, house made using oooooold recipes. These were interesting, and tasty, with names(«lift your shirt up»?) as fun as the flavor. Best of all, you can take bottles home with you. Oh yes we did.

This bar building was built in 1605. It’s amazing to be in a building that’s around 200 years older than the US! The place is small inside. The main thing people get here is Jenever which is a strong clear liquor made from juniper and is very popular and traditional. You can’t get more Dutch than this. We tried the cherry Jenever. It tasted a little like grape soda… but a highly potent spiked grape soda. There is a proper way to take your first sip of Jenever and they can tell the newbies by how they do this. The shot glass is filled to the brim which will spill if you pick up the glass. Spilling spirits is anathema, let alone wasting alcohol. It must be avoided. How to prevent spilling? Lean over, take your first sip with just your mouth and enjoy!
